You are right about the waxy flower, we call it Bunga Kantan in Malaysia, which is a ginger bud. This sort of buds (before it is full bloomed like the one you took) are perfect for one of the famous Malaysian dish, called Asam Laksa (sour spicy noodles) where it is diced thinly and is part of the ingredients to give its gingery fragrance into the mix.
