The Secret Tactics of Bobo the Daschund

Dashshunds are unique little puppers. I have only met a couple of these short-legged long bodied dogs and they had unique personalities. The one that I knew well was my granddaughter's pet, Bobo, who was not the most forgiving dog and when my daughter moved in for five months he came with her, along with their three cats. We had a full house with two bedrooms eight people two dogs, three cats and my cockatiel, Sam.

I felt like I was living in a zoo. My dog Sasha was an aging Siberian Husky who was used to having the house to herself. I was an aging grandmother used to having peace and quiet. I don't know if Bobo's habits at my house were the direct result of being crowded in with two strange people three extra cats, my dog and a bird, but I came to realize that his way of showing his displeasure with sharing the house with another canine was to be a little sneaky and passive aggressive.

Every opportunity Bobo had he would sneak into my bedroom where Sasha and I would sleep and he would pee on the floor at the end of my bed near where she slept.

I would come home and notice, with frustration, little round spots of urine on my carpeting.

My granddaughter, in defense of her little dog, would sell me with the story that it was my dog. I would explain, patiently at first, and then later not quite so patiently, that the size quarter sized spots of the urine we're definitely not the same size as Sasha would leave if she were the dog using my carpet to urinate.

In addition to the size of the spots, it was Sasha's bedroom and she never peed in the house in her bedroom. If she got frustrated and hadn't been let out for long periods of time she was known to pee in the hallway between my bedroom and the bathroom.

Before we moved into this apartment, there had been a large Saint Bernard that was known to have peed by the door and also on that same hallway.

Once you have a dog that has left their scent behind, it's very difficult to stop another animal from using that same spot as a bathroom no matter how often and thoroughly you would clean.

It became a unique ritual to come home, locate the spots and confront my granddaughter and my daughter with her daughter's dog's potty discretions.

We never fully solved this mystery until they moved back out and into their own place again. The bedroom potty accidents ceased.

By the time the family moved out, my daughter had managed to adopt another puppy. She snuck him into the house when I was on vacation and needless to say I was less than pleased to add another body to the household. This puppy was a little pitbull that my daughter said she earned as a fee for planning to do wedding photography for the previous owner. She was, in all fairness, a cute pup, but she also left her share of puddles on the carpet.

I also once dated a man who had a dachshund. I only met this dog once while visiting his home three hours away and he was a pretty cool dog. He had the whole house to himself and his little nails would click across the wooden floor. He was very fond of my boyfriend and never seemed to cause a problem.

When my boyfriend died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm two months later, his children and his ex-wife took in the dog.

I can't say that I hold any grudge to my daughter's pet, but I can say that there was a lot of frustration with his introduction into my household. The little wiener dog had a lot to say whenever my dog was around and I suppose I don't blame him since he also was used to being king of the roost until the puppy came along.

The moral of the story is there's always going to be somebody trying to assert their dominance and since Bobo was a male, I think he was doing his best to show that he was the boss.

I was happy to help and we were happy when they bought a trailer and all of them settled in. Lesson learned when blending households that not everyone will be content.

What a great post! This line reminds me of the memorable opening to Out of Africa:

I once dated a man who had a dachshund.

("I once had a farm in Africa....")

@wandrnrose the clicking sound your BF dog made while walking across the wood floor brought Dobies memory of him walking in the house back to me, he did the same thing.

I can still see him 😁 @myjob. Thanks for stopping by.
