Put-In-Bay Ferry

My first experience riding a ferry boat occurred this past May when I was invited to spend a weekend with my best friend in Middle Bass, Ohio. Middle Bass, South Bass and and North Bass Islands are all near Put-In-Bay are a small group of Islands.

I had only heard of this group of islands in passing before Jeff took me to visit by plane a year ago. We had a wonderful afternoon there and tried to take it all in in one day. My hip acted up and soon after my sciatica was in a ton of pain.

Going back in May was several months post hip arthoscopy surgery and I was excited to visit Middle Bass Island this time.

By the time Jeff dropped me off at the ferry with my suitcase and some food to share at the little villa she rented I was exhausted after work and a long drive. Stormy weather prohibited flying that evening. The ferry was twenty minutes long and watching the sun creep below the horizon before I boarded was a sign signaling that I was seriously ready for bed. I was picked up by a private boat at Put-In-Bay dock for $20 and we traveled the next 20 minutes to Middle Bass Island.

The island was amazing and quiet. We are and had spinach dip with pumpernickel bread that Jeff made for us and drinks and caught up with my friends and a new friend they brought with us. The following day the new friend cooked a tasty bacon and egg breakfast before we ferried back to Put-In-Bay to explore caves and the Butterfly house.

Renting a little golf cart to scoot around was the best idea and the cart seated six people so while some of our party went golfing and three of us hit the winery, butterfly house and two caves and boutiques before eating dinner at a restaurant overlooking the calm lake Erie.

The island is packed with tourist attractions, bars with free live music and a bull ride with tons of boutiques. Next summer we head back. Jeff and I considered purchasing a villa to use and to rent out by the week in the summer for passive income. The idea fell by the wayside as we decided to focus on purchasing my rental house and building our own house on the property after the sale of his place nearby.

Put-In-Bay has great people working there and so does Middle Bass Island. South and North Bass Islands have places to golf camp and fish. There are a number of residents and even a school! This is a wonderful gem hidden in Ohio and relatively close and reasonably inexpensive to visit so if you can take a hop over!
