Disturbing Sculptures w/ @kus-knee
Disturbing Sculptures
Phew! I just made it back from the Giacometti exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery in search of disturbing sculptures for @kus-knee's latest contest.
I hope you are ready to be disturbed.
First. I do not know what they are feeding this poor dog but I do not approve. Although his shadow would make for an amazing hipster moustache. Always thinking ahead about @melinda010100 #shadowcontest.
Disturbed, yet?
Well, you better be, because there are more where that came from. You get the feeling that this guy didn't need to lose that last 190 pounds?
These two are so ahead of the fashion trends that their own mummies wouldn't recognize them. Is it Halloween yet?
The exhibit is amazing and includes the work of a lot of other fabulous sculptors as well. If you are in the neighborhood, stop on into the VAG. Exhibit ends September 29, 2019.
All photos are my own.
Ha haa, loved your mummy comment. So true. The one on the left definately looks 'wrapped'. They are a bit macabre in places, that's for sure. I guess there is room for everything in the world of art, though I prefer the more realistic, but can appreciate the variability. Even in the underfed dog and guy world. The shadows are a real plus. I think you should head back, and if you need to, bring your own light, and make a whole series...CreepyShadowsByDay. You'll make a mint. (Necco?) Cheers to a cool post.
Thanks, DD. You aren't too far away. You guys should make the trip for this. The exhibit feels a lot like you are peering and Egyptian artifacts. They also have a video chronically his process. He really was an artistic master. I am so glad I have a gallery membership because I am going to haunt the place over the next few weeks. My son loves it too.
I'll get back to you on the shadow exposé. LOL:):):)
Great find and sooooooo disturbing!
Thank you, Kus-knee:)
I've seen sculptures like this before. But, I prefer the Rodin gallery in my local art museum.
I love Rodin too but I think there is something rather unique and special about Giacometti. I am definately a fan:)
"their own mummies wouldn't recognize them" LOL ... lol... you made a horror film into a comedy one.
Yeah ... I do that:) You shout sit through the Shining with me. Thanks, Sabari:)
Incredibly disturbing! Each one of these is a contest winner! And you even found disturbing shadows!
Thank you, Melinda. Art museum are great for shadows because of all the strong light sources and angles:)
I must be weird because Giacometti doesn't disturb me at all...
Have you seen the movie with Geoffrey Rush as Giacometti? I think it's called The Last Portrait or something like that. I loved it !
I am actually a huge fan of his work but there is definitely something otherworldly or after-life about his work. Is the film you mentioned kid-friendlyy? I am asking for my son.
Maybe i've spent so much time looking at and studying art i don't get emotional about it... Hmmm, that's not entirely correct. Heck I cry at movies! Monet's giant water lily stuff... Maybe it's a reaction and resistance to people always talking about "crazy artists "starving artists" and all the crap people invent about art... i don't think i am very clear. I should say that the dog isn't a work i would put in my living room. I would enjoy a lot of other things more. Oh and Francis Bacon does freak me out! Haha. One of the things i love about abstract art is there is no story and no historical triggers. I used to hate a particular genre of art that i wont name but it's pretty much all anyone did for a long time.
How old is your son? The movie is a little racy in parts. He has a mistress and a wife. He's actually really funny at times. The studio is the most pitiful grey room in France! They show his artistic process... Really pretty well i think. And Rush looks so perfect in the part : )
When it comes to art, I think with my own mind and often am not that into things that others are gushing over. So I know what you mean. But I like to think I have a good eye for the real deal. Fine art holds an energy that derivative works do not. They hold the attention and produce emotion and excitement easily. But that does not mean you want to feel that feeling every day in your living room. So the dog does better in a gallery than in the middle of your dinner table. I know what you mean.
My son is 9. Racy is not so good for him.
From the shadow of the dog, I think it would be interesting to see what the others can form. The dog's looks like a vista landscape.
They look like victims of fire or victims of Mt. Vesuvius.
Thank you, Lee. I definitely see what you see too. The seems something quite embalmed about Giacometti's work:)
Nice collection of disturbing sculptures photography.
Thank you, Kam:)
I think the artists like skinny. 😊
They do indeed for some reason.
Look's like that greyhound ran his last race. The one of the man, struggling to walk through his own melting flesh (disturbing!!) his head looks quite detailed, the third one... BIG FEET! haha . Love your word's Pryde, made me smile :)
Thanks, Ray. I glad you got so much out of it:)
