Ancestral Basketwork in America

in #palnet4 years ago

Some time ago I made a publication about basketry fabrics made by Venezuelan aborigines, I feel the happiness of being able to live in a country where there are still at least 20 ethnic groups that survived the massacre of the Spanish invaders.

One of the errors of Eurocentrism is to think that techniques or knowledge is born in Europe, especially when some techniques are registered in other cultures for centuries, this is the case of recognizing that the aborigines had knowledge about Gestalt even before the German school wrote the postulates.

In the fabrics you see in the graphs, is a clear example of how South American aboriginal cultures had extensive knowledge of ornamental design, the purpose of basketry was to adorn and store food, food was directly related to planting and sowing was knowledge acquired by the gods, almost all the deities of American aboriginal peoples were related to the sun as the central god.

Animals are also sacred so it is common to find in the designs of the basketwork animals which in turn are linked to ancestral legends. As well as the Greeks the aborigines of America saw in the beliefs an effective way to transmit their philosophy as a people.

Nothing is a coincidence all forms part of an organized system in which different people were the creators of these designs, perhaps the most valuable thing about this way of life is the cultural theme, how to continue representing through time the same way of making the designs, giving an added value that has remained intact percent of Thousands of years until today, nor the Spanish invasion with its genocide of at least 60 million aborigines have been able to erase the American aboriginal culture.

This basketry was developed by the mixtures of cultures that took place in Venezuela, African slaves more aborigines but whites gave like result a rich mixture where the cultural elements were flowing and interacting, this is how the knowledge on basketry and weaving of different bejucos joined with the tradition of the European hats, the same version but with other vine materials taken from the bowels of the jungle woven in the form of a hat, a bold and innovative way to make a beautiful hat that was then used by workers in the fields to withstand the inclement tropical sun.

My intention as a documentary filmmaker is to keep alive the South American culture above all is an era where the timeline and variety of content of social networks opaque or makes invisible the cultural past, the grandiosity of the techniques used by aborigines such as the Incas, Aztecs and Mayas.
