Along the Rivers Edge

In my last post I talked a little bit about the path by my house that runs alongside the river. It is an amazing place to go for a walk of a run. I took my bike out today and went for a good one hour ride and took some pictures to show you how beautiful it is. Now remember that this is in the middle of the city.

A large area of the trail is a floodplain. Some years during the spring it is buried under a few feet of water. This eccess water is caused by the spring thaw as well as the ground still being frozen. If there is a lot of snow combined with a rainy spring, the water levels rise significantly. I have images of the paths and bridges submerged.

The area is a nesting ground for many bird species. Often red cardinals can be seen as well as killdeer and multiple Canadian geese.

The path stays along the edge of the river but at times veers off into the woods. No traffic can be heard and you wouldn't even know that you are inside the city limits. There are sections of the trail that pass through parks and sports fields and it also heads downtown. So many commuters will use it to get to and from work / sporting events instead of having to drive.

It is a great place to shake off the stresses of a typical work day!
