Planting baby leeks Someone has to do this

in #organic5 years ago (edited)

Today was a bit boring although I spent almost all day outside with others. The boring part was planting leek (Dutch: prei).

Leek is planted individually in rows but as the base must be white and tender the leek is planted in a hole in a deepened row which is closed around the plant as soon as it is a bit taller say after a month.

Making the holes is the boring part. It takes hours to drill all holes.

Tools:

Baby plants bought elsewhere (bio/organic ).

The plant in the hole (so simple) and the total overview in the end:

Meanwhile another trainee was doing the better work. Cucumbers in the greenhouse!

woosh

I don't think I've ever seen such a simple manner of lifting cucumbers! That single string is so handy, do you continue raising that as the cucumber plants grow?

Leeks may be no fun to plant but boy howdy are they fun to harvest and eat!

We keep guiding the plants (clockwise) on that string but our height is fixed more or less. (We can move it sideways left or right only a bit winning some lenght and make the angle better. ) Sometimes the heavy cucumbers cause the plant to slide down again but that is a matter of harvesting in time the cucumbers.

Oh beautiful! So they can just grab on and hang out.

I once saw a method of low flat trellaces that allowed the squash to be picked from where they hung underneath the trellace.

I love learning new ways of guiding plants for easy management. Good to know this single string method works well! Thanks for sharing @goldrooster 🙌

Those plants are looking good @goldrooster! I am going to be re-potting some of my plants hopefully in the next day or so, permitting I can get some free time. Great job!

These young cucumber plants we buy from a wholesale firm but this year they are very strong and healthy indeed. The leek looks like this every year.
