Staying Positive — In a World That Tends to Focus on the Negative

in #optimism7 years ago

Whether we pick up a newspaper or magazine, or check our feeds online, or watch the news on TV, it seems like we live in a world filled with nothing but tragedy, chaos, death and destruction.

It can be difficult to stay positive in the face of all this negativity, and there's definitely a good reason behind the old saying "Misery loves company."

How Do We Find the Positive?

Staying positive in life doesn't mean we have to become super-optimistic Pollyanna's who disregard reality around us, however. Things like death and terminal illness is tragic, and we do ourselves and others no service by turning a blind eye and pretending it doesn't exist.

However, we do have a choice in terms of what we look for, in the world.

It's a matter of how we direct our intention and consciousness. Consider this:

When we see someone give a $5.00 bill to a homeless person, do we give our energy to focus on the misery of homelessness, or a moment of gratitude that someone made someone else's life better, in that moment?

When we read about a natural disaster, do we get wrapped up in the death and destruction, or do we focus on the heroic stories of perseverance, rescue and survival?

When someone rescues a homeless kitten, do we put our energy into being angry that there are homeless cats, or do we take joy in the fact that this kitten found a home?

When the shutoff notice arrives from the gas company, do we get angry and depressed over our financial situation, or do we feel gratitude that — once again — we were able to get it paid before the final due date?

The thing about focusing excessively on the negative and tragic of life is that it eventually makes us feel both angry and depressed. And then we ultimately become "part of the problem," rather than "part of the solution."

So next time you're about to reach for an angry or frustrated feeling about something, take a moment to pause and ask yourself if there's also a blessing there; something positive in the outcome. Again, not suggesting you ignore the problem, just remind yourself — even if just for a moment — that it's not ALL bad!

Bright Blessings!

Ah yes, perspective is so important! I feel like I've made great strides in this, but my hang-up is on my knee-jerk reactions, like blame and guilt. Those deeply ingrained lessons that come from generations of religious and cultural traditions, but at least I am aware and making progress, even if it is slight.
