Friendship house helping the less fortunate....

So as stated that we are going to the food banks and homeless shelters to help those in need. While I was thinking how I would be able to do it, the @ophumansangels helped provide means and @khackett and I acted today. At Friendship House, we take donations of all kinds and make sure they go to good use. The following is a list of some of the items we are always in need of the most.
KITCHEN
Ground Beef

​T-Shirts
Jeans
Socks
Underwear

HOUSE SUPPLIES
Toilet Paper
​Paper Towels
Cleaning Supplies
Trash Bags- all sizes
Laundry detergent

So we started with Goodwill, so that we could get the most for our cash. We got Socks and scarves. We already had gloves, blankets, and hats. Right next door was the Dollar Store. Well its good for cleaning supplies, so that is where we went for that. Next on our list was as much milk, cheese, meat that we could get and the best place for bulk is none other than Costco. So that is where we went. We got 8 gallons of milk, 4 pounds of shredded cheese, 5 pounds of the block cheese, 6 pounds of ground beef, paper towels, toilet paper, ect.

Ok, so now we have to deliver. Since @khackett is from here, she knows where to go. We have an address and we are off. We find the friendship house and I go to the front, speak with Mike...Didn't catch the last name. He asks that I pull around out back and he will help me unload. I find him and I open the back door. He says "WOW, all this.." I said yep wanna help me unload. 2 more guys come out. He asked me if I wanted a tax reciept, I said no because it was not mostly our money. But then as I was driving I thought maybe we should have gotten one for some proof, but anyone can call and verify if they want.

The FRIENDSHIP HOUSE CAFÉ is based here in Mount Vernon, WA USA and the following is from their website

"HISTORY

Friendship House opened its doors in 1986. It was started by ten ecumenical organizations whose shared commitment to peace and justice called them to help the growing homeless population in the Skagit Valley. This group had been meeting for two years to lay the groundwork for what became a valley-wide movement. Their vision was inspired by the Catholic Worker Movement and Dorothy Day, as well as by base Christian communities in Central America.

Friendship House's first residence at 1008 S. Third Street in Mount Vernon accommodated men downstairs and women upstairs. In 1992, a second house was purchased at 922 S. Third Street dedicated to women and families. Meals, clothing and referrals to other services were offered. The founders observed that the institutional model of shelters - where homeless people must be out by early morning - did not allow people the time or space to develop stability, nor did it give them an opportunity to heal and change. Friendship House operated (and still operates) from a "community model." It depended on the solidarity and participation of the people living here. Residents contributed to cooking, cleaning, painting, repairing and maintaining the houses.

As Friendship House moved into the mid-1990s, it opened multiple transitional houses for former residents. These houses were run in an egalitarian manner among residents with support from Friendship House staff. These houses depended on the full participation of the residents and provided the opportunity to gain life-skills in a supportive environment. At one time in it's history, Friendship House managed five transitional houses.

As Friendship House looks forward to over 30 years of service, it holds true to the vision of its founders. It remains an independent organization committed to building community among people in crisis. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Friendship House is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and operates with a staff of seven. Friendship House partners with other agencies in the region's continuum of care."

We decided to donate to the friendship house because of the fact that a lot of the homless people that we have met in our #ophumanangels mission, stated that they have helped them the most. It seems like this organization is doing alot to help the homeless in the Valley, so we are glad that we could help them out with the help of all of you. We collected $126 from @lyndsaybowes, @hendrix22, and @davedickeyyall and with some cash of our own, we gave about $200 worth of well needed items to help those in need.

@khackett and I have decided that once a month, we will be going out and purchasing items that the shelter need and proceed to keep doing good things for the people that need it the most. It has been a very rewarding expeirence and I think has made us better people in the world.
