Steemit Open Mic Week 44: Bourree from BWV 996
I almost didn't make this video due to the fact I'm returning this guitar today. It came with a number of defects including some warping on the lower bout near the bridge, likely from dry conditions. This is the second model I've gotten of the fusion orchestra, and both have been duds. However, it doesn't sound that bad, and it's almost playable with a capo. I was intrigued by the idea of a nylon string guitar with a radiused fretboard, but it turns out that even if one of the models I ordered were without flaws, I still wouldn't like it that much. It doesn't feel like I'm playing a classical guitar at all, and it's likely that if I needed to get a set up, it would be near impossible to find someone capable of doing so at an affordable price.
Anyway, I've been playing this piece for over 15 years now, so I thought it was about time I played it for people. Thanks for watching and reading.
SMASHING!
Thanks!
Hi @oliverwaterman,
Thank you for this post. I have become familiar with a number of Bach's harpsichord pieces, but I think this was the first time I've heard any of his works on guitar. I really enjoyed listening to your rendition of Bourree.

Gosh, I nearly missed your contribution this week Oliver and having now watched it I am delighted I didn't!
This Bourree has always been one of my favourite pieces of music, (almost) regardless of what it is played on as long as it is played well. One of my guitar heros Leo Kottke played it some years back and I had a go but then decided to leave it to those who were more capable.
To use modern parlance Oliver, IMHO you totally owned that piece. You have a wonderful command of your instrument while appearing very relaxed, making it a real pleasure to watch your performance.
And I feel like a teacher doing an end of term report... although I actually mean what I have written!
Haha, thanks Geoff! definitely one of my favorite pieces as well, I'll probably keep it in my repertoire for as long as my hands work.
Good sound, good technique. Upvoted.
thanks!
Well played Oliver!
I'm not a professionally trained classical guitarist but if you can, please listen to my composition for this week's open mic.
All the Best!
Thanks! Your composition is very beautiful. There are a few technique things I might be able to give you some pointers on if your interested, but your playing is very nice, especially for someone who's never had proper training.
Thank you!
It's an honour for me to get such a nice comment from you.
This is quite relaxing. I'd love to play this way one day. You're inspiring me to give guitar playing a real shot again (instead of just playing the same few chords over and over). So thank you for this.
Cheers! In my experience it's only frustrating for a while and then it becomes addicting. There's so many great fingerstyle techniques out there too. I hope to someday really delve into flamenco. It's more fun than 90% of the drugs I've done, so, worth it. Best wishes on your guitar future!
Nice playing! Hopefully your next guitar won't have any defects.
Thanks!

Beautiful playing. Thank you for sharing Oliver! Good luck on getting your next guitar, there can't be 3 duds in a row can there? :)
Thanks, happy to! I'm probably just going to get a refund and maybe try again in a while. I still have the guitar I've used in my other videos and just need to repair it.
Oooh what's wrong with your other guitar?
I dropped it one night when I was a little drunk. It has a crack and the binding broke a little on the lower bout under the bridge. It's not a hard fix, I've just been lazy. At least I get to kill to birds with one stone and also install a pickup in it. Finally today went to the store and got glue and an input jack after needing to for almost a month.
Right on, cool that you are able to repair your own guitar, that's a skill I definitely don't have, but thankfully my husband can :) I look forward to hearing more tunes from you, you add a unique sound to the open mic that's for sure! Cheers <3 <3
Thanks!! I'm glad! I'm not that good at it, but I can at least make the thing work, wont look pretty though. At least you don't have to shell out big bucks at the stores, that's what made me learn how to badly repair.
Cheers
Yeah gotta save that money, for some more drinkin and guitar smashing LOL!!
hahhahahaha, hopefully I don't do that again.
Thanks for playing Steemit Open Mic.
For sure!
