You can use Matrix/Riot for

  • instant messages
  • group chat
  • voice & video calls.
  • conference calling
  • file transfers
  • bridge with irc Slack, Gitter, IRC, Twitter, SMS and more

Every Matrix server is called a "Synapse".
All the synapses together create one network where you can to talk with everyone else.

It doesn't matter where you create your account choose a source that you trust if you aren't going to host your own server.

If you want a real open source alternative to Discord and such, then give Matrix/Riot a try. I think you'll like it a lot.

  • If you have some experience with webservers you can easily install your own Matrix Synapse on your desktop or VPS.

Riot has most of the bells and whistles you would expect from other apps like Discord and Skype.

Riot is available on most popular devices such as : IOS, Android, MacOS, Windows, Linux

    Thanks for the tip, you know we're using Slack for the Nth Society project and we're just about to hit our 10k message limit. It will suck to lose all the context for our discussions, so this might be an alternative. I'm going to try it out.

    I think that Matrix/Riot has all the features you are looking for.
    It's completely open source and it has been around for a long time.
    Riot has been my favorite messenger for a few years now.
