Câmpina was documented in 1503 and in 1593 it was recorded as a customs point on the road to Transylvania. In 1663 it became a market. The town with the status of a market in 1663 gradually developed, benefiting in 1791 the first arrangement of the road on the Prahova Valley, thanks to the Austrian troops. In 1864, this place was raised to the rank of city. In 1890, the first oil scaffolding in the country was built in Câmpina, and the "Fabrica Noua" refinery, then the largest in Europe, was built in 1895. In 1994 Câmpina was declared a town.

The location of the locality in a sub-Carpathian area, at the confluence of the Prahova and Doftana valleys, makes the town with old tourist traditions and its surroundings still appreciated and frequented by many visitors coming from all over the country.

Climbing the Muscel hill, at the point named "AT THE OBSERVER", from its 550 m it will see under the whole panorama of the city and its surroundings.

From here, it is easy to see that the three rivers that surround it, on the north of Campinita river, to the east Doftana river, and to the west of the Prahova river, managed to shape the Câmpina terrace, transforming it into a triangular form platform, sweeter or steeper slopes.

The Câmpina Terrace, modeled thousands of thousands of years ago, has the advantage of being surrounded by a series of hills, which we can say have turned it into a depression away from the strong winds that are undisturbed in the plain area.

The crown of hills that protects the city is covered with deciduous forests and pastures, which give it a picturesque landscape, while providing the locality with a favorable climate.

But the most beautiful part of the city is situated in the northeast direction to the Voila neighborhood, where there is also the area of leisure people of the locals named "FANTASY WITH THE CIRES", covered with deciduous forests, among which there are clusters of conifers, populated with squirrels, sunlit meadows with grass carpets and glittering with flowers. This area, so picturesque, could not escape the eye of the artist, who was the painter Nicolae Grigorescu and who lived for so many years here. Even one of these shades is called the "POIANA GRIGORESCU", being preferred by the artist for her picturesque.

In fact, starting with 1836, when the poet Cezar Bolliac, hosted by the progressive boyar I. Câmpineanu, describes the beauties of these places, numerous cultural personalities will be going through Câmpina: Dimitrie Bolintineanu, Ion Heliade Rădulescu, Bogdan Petriceicu Haşdeu, George Cosbuc, Constantin Istrati, Eugen Jebeleanu, Geo Bogza, etc., personalities who linked their life and work to these lands.
