The Olympics - Money vs Lives?

in #olympics10 years ago

Every year I look forward to the Olympics. These athletes are absolutely incredible. This year though with all of the chaos and disease in Brazil, I have to wonder have our countries placed the money from endorsements and possible glory over the lives of our athletes.

First there is the Zika virus that could affect any children that they have. The long term effects are still unknown.

And then we have the incredibly polluted water that our swimmers are being asked to swim in. This water has severe strains of bacteria and viruses. It is so bad that many swimmers have had to have special suits made to be able to swim in it.

And then we have the fact that the city has so little money that the police were running out of gas and several protested at the aiport with signs saying "welcome to hell."

Oh and let's not forget that many of the locals have been literally forced to leave their homes to provide housing for the athletes. Did I mention that these areas are not the safest neighborhoods in Rio?

As I said, I love the Olympics. I am Greek and the Olympics started in Greece. We watch it every year. I happen to also love Brazil. It is a beautiful people and the Brazilians that I have met are wonderful people.

I just wonder when common sense went out the window, as far as when and where it should be held. These problems were known about for a very long time now and yet there was no talk of moving the venue. Could it possibly be because of the thought of the loss of possible revenue instead of some sense of glory?
