Big Oil in the White House
When environmental regulations and sensible policy came into vogue into the 1970s it was a people's revolution that advocated for quality of life. It advocated for respecting the integrity of the natural world and environmental, health and safety regulations. The American Petroleum Institute (API) has battled for decades to deconstruct the influence of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. and the victory is nearly complete. 52 environmental laws have been overturned or rolled back. Oil and gas industry lobbyists freely roam the halls of Congress as their political action committees send floods of money to Congress members to do their legislative bidding. It's a revolving door between industry CEOs and top flight positions within President's Cabinet and directors of agencies. Big money rules, power is consolidated, and pollution flows ever more readily through our waters and lands, contaminating the reservoirs and airsheds of the masses while the denizens of private wealth communities sip their designer bottled water. Our sphere of sustainability sinks into small pockets and outliers as the New Rome burns.
