Hello to all dear friends.
Today I dedicate my watercolor painting work to the city of Naples.
A city famous throughout the world, with two faces, the characteristic and picturesque aspects, and the many problems linked to organized crime, such as the Camorra.

In today's post I want to share with you only some topics of the Neapolitan culture and the views of the alleys of the historic center of Naples; the Spanish neighborhoods.

Oggi dedico il mio lavoro pittorico ad acquarello alla città di Napoli.
Una città famosa in tutto il mondo, dalle due facce, gli aspetti caratteristici e pittoreschi, ed i molteplici problemi legati alla criminalità organizzata, come la camorra.

Nel post di oggi voglio condividere con voi soltanto alcuni argomenti della cultura napoletana e degli scorci dei vicoli del centro storico di Napoli; i Quartieri Spagnoli.

The watercolor I painted is a characteristic street in the neighborhoods, where among fish stalls and molluscs of all kinds, you can find greengrocers or the famous Neapolitan basses.
The new administration of the city has changed the face of the alleys and the historic center, enriching them with numerous street-art works and with an increase in services and security.
In fact, inside the alleys we find thousands of tourists who wander among the ancient shops and typical trattorias, also enjoying the numerous gastronomic offerings on the street stalls.

L'acquarello che ho dipinto è proprio una caratteristica strada dei quartieri, dove tra bancarelle di pesce e di molluschi di ogni tipo, trovate fruttivendoli o i famosi bassi napoletani.
La nuova amministrazione della città, ha cambiato molto il volto dei vicoli e del centro storico, arricchendoli con numerose opere di street-art e con un aumento dei servizi e della sicurezza.
Infatti, all'interno dei vicoli troviamo migliaia di turisti che girano tra le botteghe antiche e tra le trattorie tipiche, gustando anche le numerose offerte gastronomiche sulle bancarelle per la strada.

Via Toledo

This road, the most important of the Historical Naples, divides the Spanish Quarters into two blocks.
The road in the 1800s was included in the European route of the Grand Tour, and was a destination for artists, musicians and poets from all over Europe.

Questa strada, la più importante della Napoli Storica, divide in due blocchi i Quartieri Spagnoli.
La strada nel lontano 1800, venne inserita nel percorso europeo del Gran Tour, e fu meta di artisti, musicisti e poeti di tutta Europa.

Walking along via Toledo and its traverses, you can quietly taste small samples of fish or typical Neapolitan desserts, such as babà, pastiera or sfogliatelle.
In Naples you can eat at any time of day, even late at night.

Passeggiando per via Toledo e per le sue traverse, potrete tranquillamente degustare piccoli assaggi di pesce o di dolci tipici della cucina napoletana, come il babà, la pastiera o le sfogliatelle.
A Napoli si mangia a qualsiasi ora della giornata, anche a notte fonda.

Votive aedicule in honor of the Madonna

Walking among the alleys and stairs of the ancient palaces of Naples you can meet ancient and modern votive shrines, dedicated mainly to the Madonna, but also to a famous soccer player; Diego Armando Maradona who with his footballing prowess won the Italian Serie A soccer championship at Napoli.
Even today the Neapolitans remember him with passion.

Camminando tra i vicoli e le scale degli antichi palazzi di Napoli potete incontrare delle antiche e moderne edicole votive, dedicate prevalentemente alla Madonna, ma anche ad un famoso calciatore; Diego Armando Maradona che con le sue prodezze calcistiche fece vincere nel 1987 al Napoli il campionato di calcio di Serie A italiano.
Ancora oggi i napoletani lo ricordano con passione.

Let's go back to the history of these places rich in life and people from all over the world.
The neighborhoods were built in the 16th century by the Spaniards, near the palace of the viceroy of Naples, in a strategic position around the port area.
This labyrinth of palaces and staircases served as lodgings for the troops of the Spanish army, to suppress the continuous revolts of the Neapolitan people.
This area is famous for its labyrinths, inside buildings and exteriors, where often a building and a church are the same building. From some doors of the buildings of the 1600s, it is possible to take a staircase that takes you up high, on a hill in another neighborhood.
There are layers of buildings on each other, over 400 years old, which form small crosses, called vichi.
Inside this maze of alleys and stairways, the strongest impact is given by the laundry hanging out to dry, a frame of white flags along the streets, especially on sunny days.

Torniamo alla storia di questi luoghi ricchi di vita e persone di tutto il mondo.
I quartieri vengono edificati nel XVI secolo dagli spagnoli, vicino al palazzo del vicerè di Napoli, in posizione strategica intorno alla zona del porto.
Questo labirinto di palazzi e scale, servirono per alloggio alle truppe dell'esercito spagnolo, per reprimere le rivolte continue del popolo napoletano.
Questa zona è famosa per i suoi labirinti, interni ai palazzi ed esterni, dove spesso, un palazzo ed una chiesa sono lo stesso edificio.

Da alcuni portoni dei palazzi del 1600, è possibile imboccare una scala che ti porta in alto, su una collina in un altro quartiere.
Sono presenti stratificazioni di palazzi l'uno sull'altro, di oltre 400 anni, che formano piccole traverse, chiamate vichi.
Dentro questo dedalo di vicoli e scalette, l'impatto più forte è dato dalla biancheria stesa ad asciugare, una cornice di bandiere bianche lungo le stradine, soprattutto nelle giornate di sole.

Other beautiful surprises that we can encounter along the streets of historic Naples are the typically Neapolitan street artists, with ancient music, over 200 years old.

Altre bellissime sorprese che possiamo incontrare lungo le strade della Napoli storica son gli artisti di strada, tipicamente napoletani, con la musica antica, di oltre 200 anni.

Negli ultimi anni è andata aumentando anche la street art e numerosi artisti, in accordo con le amministrazioni, hanno lasciato le loro testimonianze sui muri del centro.

In recent years, street art has also increased and many artists, in agreement with the administrations, have left their testimonies on the walls of the center.

I leave you with a curiosity:
In Naples and its environs, when you buy a new car or motorcycle, many people go to the priest to have it blessed. I share some photographs of the blessing performed on a motorcycle.
As you know, the Neapolitans are very superstitious!

A Napoli e dintorni, quando acquisti una nuova auto o moto, moltissime persone, vanno dal sacerdote a farla benedire. Condivido alcune fotografie della benedizione eseguita su una motocicletta.
