A glimpse of history.
Hello dear friends.
Yesterday I told you about the watercolor technique and its characteristics and difficulties.
I also told you that we artists participate in live outdoor painting competitions.
Today I share with you the joy of a victory in a painting competition that took place in Ardea,a city south of Rome.
The race was organized by the Tourism Promotion Authority of the city of Ardea in collaboration with the Foundation Giacomo Manzù Museum.
Giacomo Manzù was one of the most important sculptors of the European scene of the 20th century.
The jury was chaired by the daughter of the late sculptor, Mrs. Giulia Manzù, who owns the foundation.
The theme of the race was inherent in the city of Ardea, where the sculptor died, in all its aspects: tourist, artistic, historical and cultural.
As you can imagine I spent all day representing a subject dear to me: the Roman architecture, present in the area of Ardea, roman city south of Rome.
I chose to paint an agger, a brave choice.
What is an agger
Dealing with the Roman Empire, it can only be an interesting difientisive system.
A large embankment resting close to the wall or defensive buildings.
The interesting thing is that inside the embankment it was possible to access it through solidly closed doors or openings.

And in front of the embankment there was always the large moat made from the excavation of the reinforcement material.
The agger was the most important defensive system for the Roman Empire, and large blocks of tuff were often used to reinforce the fence wall.
As you can see from my watercolor I highlighted the tuff, ochre yellow, typical material obtained from the excavations of the Agger of Ardea.
The choice of tuff was very important, because it is a fireproof material, so not fireable by the armies.
I chose to paint a large-format watercolor, to give more importance to my pictorial work.
How did it go?
Fine!
I ranked first, in front of 45 artists.
I won the first prize of 700 euros.
The most beautiful and siginifying thing is that my watercolor has become part of the collection of the Giacomo Manzù Museum, in Ardea.

Uno scorcio di storia.
Ciao carissimi amici.
Ieri vi ho parlato della tecnica dell'acquarello e delle sue caratteristiche e difficoltà.
Vi ho anche detto che noi artisti partecipiamo a gare di pittura live all'aperto.
Oggi condivido con voi la gioia per una vittoria in una gara di pittura che si è svolta ad Ardea, una città a sud di Roma.
La gara è stata organizzata dall'Ente di Promozione Turismo della città di Ardea in collaborazione con la Fondazione del Museo Giacomo Manzù.
Giacomo Manzù è stato uno degli scultori più importanti del panorama europeo del 20° secolo.
La Giuria era presieduta dalla figlia del defunto scultore, la signora Giulia Manzù, proprietaria della fondazione.
Il tema della gara era inerente la città di Ardea, dove è morto lo scultore, in tutti i suoi aspetti: turistici, artistici, storici e culturali.
Come potete immaginare mi sono dedicato tutto il giorno a rappresentare un soggetto a me caro: le architetture romane, presenti nella zona di Ardea, città romana.
Ho scelto di dipingere un agger, una scelta coraggiosa.
Cos'è un agger ?
Trattando di impero romano, non può essere che un interessante sistema difiensivo.
Un grosso terrapieno poggiato a ridosso di cinta muraria o edifici difensivi.
L'aspetto interessante è che dentro il terrapieno era possibile accedervi attraverso portoni o aperture chiuse solidamente.
E davanti al terrapieno era sempre presente il grosso fossato ricavato dallo scavo del materiale di rinforzo.
L'agger era il sistema difensivo più importante per l'impero romano, e spesso venivano usati grossi blocchi di tufo a rinforzare il muro di recinzione.
Come potete vedere dal mio acquarello ho evidenziato il tufo, di colore giallo ocra, tipico materiale ricavato dagli scavi dell'agger di Ardea.
La scelta del tufo era molto importante, perchè è un materiale ignifugo, quindi non incendiabile dagli eserciti.
Ho scelto di dipingere un acquarello di grande formato, per dare più importanza al mio lavoro pittorico.
Come è andata?
Benissimo!
Mi sono classificato al primo posto, davanti a 45 artisti.
Ho vinto il primo premio di 700 euro.
La cosa più bella e siginificativa è che il mio acquarello è entrato a far parte della collezione del Museo Giacomo Manzù, ad Ardea.
