Jon's eyes

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

from Richard III, spoken by Gloucester
by William Shakespeare

In the Richard III theatrical work of the Shakespearean tetralogy, it is told
the eternal war between the York and the Lancaster also known as the War of the Two Roses.
The play by William Shakespeare is the source of inspiration for this very long series, Game of Thrones, by the writer George R.R.Martin.

Sometimes I work on commission, that is, I paint a subject on request.

Performing a painted subject, ordered by other people is always a very hard test, you have to confront yourself with their ideas and their expectations.
Personally I ask many questions, trying to pick up some interesting signals for the subject to portray.
Although it is very difficult to find indications or clues about animals or other particular subjects.

In thirty years of activity, many clients have happened to me who have commissioned the most diverse and sometimes trivial subjects, others very interesting
List some of the client requests:

  • represent the villa in which they lived
  • a boat
  • pets, dogs, cats or birds
  • the portrait of their children
  • a deceased.
  • cartoon characters.
  • the lover.
  • little stories about Steemit.

Today I share with you an oil on canvas of one of the most famous characters of the last ten years, we see it both on television and in cinemas.
Jon Snow.

This painting was born out of an explicit request from a couple of young people who wanted a portrait of the famous character from the series The Game of Thrones.
My main problem was to give a context to the character, that is to make it as significant as possible.
Since my clients wanted a traditional portrait, that is a bust, of a typically English style.
I could not go deeper into the search for a setting and the personal objects of the character, but only on his psychological traits.
What I wanted to highlight is the brightness of Jon's face, and the cleanliness of his facial features, explicit reference to his personality.

His repulsion towards social contacts, his isolation, is in the distrust of his eyes.

Also the cold that comes, glacial, in the worry of his look.

Half-length portrait of the face.
I tried to characterize it with rapid and free brush strokes

I wanted to highlight the eyes, and the hair, moved by the icy wind of the dreaded winter.
The fur coat blends with the snowflakes, which fly into the cold atmosphere.

I hope you like the painting.
A hug without snow.
Armando.

  • animali domestici, cani, gatti o uccelli
  • il ritratto dei loro figli
  • un defunto.
  • personaggi dei cartoni.
  • l' amante.

Armando.

Dear Armando you managed to make Jon Snow better than he is in reality, lol. More serious and more deternined. I am a huge fan of GoT but the last season was the worst so far, nice to see Jon in your portrait as it was in the first seasons. Really refreshing:)

hahaha is very true and forever

I really like how you captured the essence of this character in your portrait, @armandosodano :) Somehow you understand Jon's solitude really well and you conveyed it nicely here !!!

You are always very considerate with your commission pieces, and I can feel that you try to discover the story behind the character before you painted this... I can feel the texture and movements of the snow as a framing element around Jon's face and this is a very lovely touch to this artwork, for sure <3

The emphasis on Jon's eyes is well done, also ! I think your clients would be pleased with this work ! :D

thank you dear for nice comment as always, a big hug.

Great details and thank you for explaining the painting too! May I know how long did it take to complete it?
