Now Playing Week 12 - Mencintaimu
I’ll be continuing my habit of sharing a Bahasa Indonesia / Bahasa Malaysia song each week. This week my pick is an all time favorite by the powerhouse Krisdayanti.
I’ve heard of this song during my college days when I was gigging with some friends from Aswara. In UCSI, most of the contemporary students are very much influenced by jazz music, therefore most jamming repertoire are from the Real Book (or Fake Book as some would like to call it).
The song starts off with a minor key, giving a melancholy feel to it. That in turn gives a stronger contrast when the chorus comes in with a chord I of the relative minor, suddenly everything feels much brighter. It is then followed by the typical Pachabel’s Canon chord progression, with passing chords and ii-V-I slotted in every now and then.
After 2 full rounds of verse and chorus, the saxophone come in during the interlude and delivers a powerful solo. It then heightens the excitement by leading the song into a transposed key! The singer then comes in with repeated choruses without bringing down the intensity and it gradually fades off. I guess the music arranger felt that it was best to end the song that way as it wouldn’t have been natural for the singer and musicians to ‘calm down’.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :)
Thanks for entering this week's #nowplaying!
