How my over-sharing made my introduceyourself flop, and made me feel like a loser.

in #notanintroduceyourself8 years ago (edited)

I just got my steemdollars for my introduce yourself post. It was $12.

Hi, my name is Laura Lemons.

I felt like a bit of a loser when I looked at all the other intros and pretty much every one was garnering more steem than mine. After analyzing theirs vs mine I realized it came down to a problem that I have faced my entire life. I over-share.

My steemit intro included information about my abusive childhood, the news that my best friend died recently, and I think even mentioned my chronic illness. These things are all stuff I want to blog about but did they really need to be included in my introduction? Shouldn't people have the choice of knowing they are about to read about some heavy shit? Why can't I ever just keep it simple? Maybe I need to use that, what's it called, acronym KISS, in my everyday life.

Let's try this again, don't worry I won't use the tag

Hi, my name is Laura Lemons and I am a passionate artist, a once avid but now casual gamer, and a silly girl who likes wearing fuzzy ears, tails, and onesies, and blowing bubbles. I also have started collecting vintage toys from my childhood. I started with Betty-Spaghettis and am going to move onto polly pockets, and tamogatchis. ...I might be a little but I haven't explored that yet! Wait, is that over-sharing?! D: AM I INCAPABLE OF NOT OVER-SHARING?

Hi, my name is Laura Lemons and I have no filter.

I am not sure what the conclusion of this blog is or if it will change anything at all about how I present myself in the future. I may at least try to go lighter on the heavy stuff right away and maybe shine some light on my talents, hobbies, passions, and positive characteristics. Perhaps, I need to stop letting the trauma of my past define me and keep myself from unknowingly (until now) letting my past make the first impression, instead of myself.

beautiful. seems we are alike in many ways.
i started a post, probably over-shared. but thats cool. its me. no apologies.
i look forward to your future posts.

haha thanks.

Yeah, that's why I admitted I don't know if this realization will change anything. Because for me I just have no filter and can't seem to not over-share. But I can at least try not to bring up my past so often. I don't want my shitty childhood defining me.

Oversharing will continue though. In some fashion. :)

Just watched your intro video. :D I am vegan too! and a 28 yr old artist, over sharer. I will keep an eye on your posts.

I was also a little surprised by the payout on your introduce yourself post. There have been a lot of spammy introduceyourself posts recently where people just rip off a few pics from someones instagram. It's possible that ned and dan just happened to miss yours. Unfortunately I think it will be more hit-and-miss from now on about what gets large payouts since things quickly get buried in the 'new' feed as the rate of posting increases. Anyway... post on! I'll be following your posts.

yay!. :D Oh, I didnt know it had a lot to do with key people missing your intro. Hey, maybe it isn't me! I was mostly just poking some light-hearted fun at myself. :)

Yes, the amount of 'influence' that votes have depends upon the amount of steem power you have in your account. People with a lot of money invested in steem power on their account get much larger influence, since they have a greater stake in the company. Number of votes is not so important as the total steem power of those that do vote. For example, I upvoted your comment and it changed the value to $0.01. If @ned upvoted you, it would probably get like $10.

o0ohhh. Interesting. Does that count for when you upvote your own post? I now have a bit of steem power. Not a huge amount but a lot more after getting paid for 3 blogs. I am really fascinated with the working of steemit. Very addictive and interesting to me. :D

Yes, you can add value to your own posts by upvoting them. The rewards from every post are split between the creator and the voters. You should upvote your own posts (if you think they're valuable :P) because you will get a slightly larger fraction of the rewards that way.

May I ask how many tags you put into this post? I keep finding it over all sections...

The whales don't upvote intro posts anymore, I read it yesterday somewhere.

thats good to know. It isnt me then, perhaps. haha

This post will make a lot more if you make the headshot your default pic for the post.

How do I do that? wouldnt it have to be listed first?

there, its a pic of me now, but not the fuzzy hat one. Should it be that one specifically? lol

If you put the last picture (with the hi steemit sign) first in your post, then it will show up next to the title of your post in the news feed, and more people will probably click on it. Maybe. Ned has been on a vendetta to upvote people that verify their identities.

But then my snarky message to the "ugh" guy will have to be erased!? >_< haha

Ugh, let's get this straight. There is no proof of the girl in the picture being you. Anyone could've made an account and called it that and taken a random pic of the internet to act like its you. Maybe take a minute and post a new pic with some verification that the real you (in the pic) has some proof of being here on steem.

How can a picture be verified in that way? We're not meeting in person, so... how is anyone supposed to know that any picture is a "real" picture of the person posting?
This isn't meant as sarcastic. I'm new on Steemit, so I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing at this point, but I really am wondering how this "verification" is supposed to be done.

I posted another pic of me with my name and "Hi Steemit". Thats really all I can do. :P I think it worked.

I have a bunch of pics. Why "ugh"? A bit of a rude initial response. You could have easily gotten your point across without that attitude. I can gladly post "proof" of who I am in a minute. I saw tons of people posting intos with pics that weren't PROOF. But whatever yo.

One thing to note... introductions and other Steemit posts in general won't be getting as big of payouts as they did before July 4th. Up until July 4th there were no payouts and everything before that date was eventually payed out on that one day. After that day the payouts are done every 24 hours. Which leads to smaller payouts.

Sharing too much information is a problem I have had in the past, you just have to try and regulate it, and keep things positive.

Ones after jul 4th still get more than me usually. ( ._.)

LOL it's okay though. :) Gave me a chance to analyze how I present myself to new people. ^_^

Or you could look at it this way:
You earned as much in 2 days as I did in 2 months goofing around ^^

I am really not upset. I was just making a silly post. lol

you made $12 in 2 months?

you must mean overall, when posting this I had not yet had that huge blog but also wasnt really upset in any real way. I meant to convey lightheartedness and simply a reflection on myself. Not really anger or bitching.

No worries I didn't consider it as bitching, it was a legit observation of yours!
Yes I meant overall ;)

Welcome ,Laura I know you seem to have had a rough start but I'm sure overtime you will regulate over sharing. Maybe break everything you have to say over a few blog posts.
I can understand where your coming, I just started steeming and it's been a bit rough and confusing but stay positive. Best of luck.
