Geology QUIZ - A Rare Rock In Norway THE ANSWER

in #norway7 years ago (edited)

Although I do know the name of this rock, this post is partly a promised response to the Nature Identification Thread #1 by @mountainwashere.

The rock was found by me nearby Oslo (Norway). It is extremely rare globally. It was found at 100 MAMSL.

Can anybody figure out the name of this type of rock?

Rhomb-porphyry is a porphyritic igneous rock with abundant wedge- or lens-shaped anorthoclase (feldspar) phenocrysts. Rhomb-porphyry is a rare rock type. The most well-known is the rhomb-porphyry from the Oslo Rift in Norway. Similar rocks are known to exist in only two other locations: The East African Rift Valley and the Antarctic source.

@janusface

It's a Rhomb Porphyry if I'm not mistaken!

Woah! I just checked back today to see if I got it right.
Thanks to whoever voted for my answer, made my day!

@janusface,
Rhomb-porphyry is a very rare rock type, but it has a highly recognizable appearance, which makes it well-known not only in southern Norway, but also in Denmark and Germany where they occur as part of a glacial drift. Oslo Rift, Norway.

Correct: Congrats!

first time I hear of this...Googling :D

Excellent photo, maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me this stone is called Gneiss, , it is in Norway. Thank you @janusface

Very nice try, but unfortunately wrong:)

Oh yes, I tried, but I made a mistake :)

Maybe it is Preikestolen ? Or some rock in the same area?

I have no idea but now I am really curious XD. To be honest it looks like poop... Maybe dinosaur poop? 😂😂😂😂

Creative guess, but this rock is not a poop:)

Let's call it the "vibrating speckle rock" xD

Congratulations @janusface
