Do I need to buy some Steem to help with my upvote? It seems like it will take forever to get more SP buy just curating and posting..I've been here for a month and only earned 2.097 SP is there any tips that you can share to help me earn more SP

You could always buy Steem Power to get a bigger upvote, but it is also entirely possible to grow your account from zero to a decent amount without buying anything. I have never bought Steem, but my account is actually pretty valuable right now, and I've gotten it to this point by interacting with other authors and spending much time on writing my own posts. My best strategy for growing into a big account is to be active, interact with other people who share your passions and make good content. It takes a long time to build a following base, but it is worth it once you reach a certain point.
