WHY SHOULD THE SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR OF A WOMAN BE CONTROLLED?FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION(FGM) IS AN INHUMANE ACT!

in #nigeria6 years ago (edited)

According to WHO, Female genital mutilation is the partial or total removal of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. Female genital Mutilation(FGM) is also known as Female circumcision. As at 2016, Research showed that over 200 million women in 27 African countries have been circumcised. FGM is usually done few days after birth or during puberty.

Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) is usually done with a blade and it involves the partial or total removal of the clitoris, partial or total removal of the labia, infibulation which is the removal of the clitoris and labia with stitching of the vaginal orifice leaving a small hole for the passage of menstrual fluid and urine.

This practise is a traditional practise and has been proven to be violation of human rights. The practise is basically done to control the sexual behaviour of the female child.

Circumcising her will enable her to control her sexual urge so she can stay with her husband without jumping from one man to another---Muniyat Lamidi

In our Nigerian society today, a woman is expected to dress well, protect herself, protect her dignity and is not expected to be promiscuous. In defence of FGM by those that practise it, to protect a woman from being promiscuous, she must be circumcised.

FGM is an inhumane act, apart from violating the human rights of the female child, her sexual needs and urges are also policed and taken from her and as such her emotional health and life is being shattered to pieces.

WHO has also proven that FGM has no health benefits and it even causes more health issues to the victim like pain, retention of urine, wound infection, anaemia due to fatal loss of blood, urinary infections, tetanus, pain while urinating, pain during sexual intercourse, infertility issues and in some cases complications during child birth.

An act that can cause this much harm to a female child, why is still practised especially amongst the uneducated and in the rural areas of Nigeria?

According to the data from the Nigerian demographics and health survey, 24.8℅ of Nigerian girls and women aged 15 to 49 have been circumcised. In the south east states of Nigeria, 45% has been circumcised, and in the south west states of Nigeria, 55% has been circumcised with Osun state having the highest practise of FGM at 76.6℅.

Janet Ajanni told a story of how her mother-in-law made her accept the idea of circumcising her daughter because of her ignorance on this issue and how she almost lost her daughter to FGM if not for the intervention of professional surgeons. You can read full story here

What has been done to stop female genital mutilation in Nigeria?

FGM has been recognized world wide as the violation of human rights. In 2015, President Goodluck Jonathan enacted the law against FGM. The law states that anyone caught practising FGM will be sentenced to 4 years imprisonment or asked to pay 200,000 Nigerian Naira, but till today, no one has been punished by the law for this act.

One of the reasons this law has not succeeded in fishing out the culprits is that FGM is usually done by families and family is a strong and close knit group, so it's difficult for family members to report each other. So they keep the crime amongst themselves.

So what is the way forward?

To profer lasting solution to the eradication of this inhumane practise in Nigeria. There is need for sensitization and educative programmes on the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation for parents and the female child especially for those in the rural areas of the country.

Janet Ajanni said if only she had known the health consequences of FGM, she wouldn't have accepted her mother-in-law's idea to circumcise her daughter.

The law against FMG can only be effective if parents and the female child can be taught to strongly say 'NO' to FGM and if you by any chance get to see anyone practise this act. Do not hesitate to report them!
Let's say No Female Genital Mutilation!
Let's say No to human rights violation!

I once saw down among some ladies and they support female circumcision, they proved that removing the clitoris reduces the urge for sexual promiscuity among ladies, I couldn't argue with them at all, I don't have a vagina.

I don't have a vagina.

Hahahaha. You dont have to have one to tell them what your thoughts on the issue are nah.

Such a heavy subject. I remember the first time I heard about this gruesome practice I was totally shocked, and could not imagine the pain that these procedures caused these poor babies and girls.

In turn, I don't believe male circumcision to be much better though it is widely accepted. There are quite a few studies correlating male circumcision with an adult inability to recognize and connect with emotions, as well as higher levels of aggression, impulsivity and depression throughout life.

I can't grasp what the possible emotional and mental side effects are for women who have had their clitoris or labia forcibly removed..

My heart goes out to all those who've been involved with these distresing procedures.

Thanks for your generous comment. I don't know much about the effects of male circumcision sha. I only know it is widely accepted. Guess, I should check it out!

Nigerians will not concur to that easily ,since we are still underdeveloped ,it will be a gradual process not a must do or else it will cause commotion to uneducated once.but I tell you when the time comes when we must have giving proper orientation all will adopt it.

Thanks for sharing sister .
