The Nigerian Girl Child

in #nigeria7 years ago

Right from the day she was born, to some she's a blessing, and to some she's just a curse. But in all, they say to themselve "one day she will be married out to a rich and good looking man, and that way we will have a rich in law to look upon, and from that moment she is prepared for the unknown rich in law.

She's restricted from playing freely with the male counterpart, just so she grows up having a beautiful and spotless skin, without disabilities, just to attract the unknown rich in law for them.

She is made to believe that her male counterpart is above her and therefore it is a taboo to fight him back no matter what.
She is made to belive that the male counterpart has the responsibility to protect and provide for her, so she boasts in them.

She is made to understand that all the house chores including the cooking is her responsibility, and therefore she shouldnt expect much help from anybody.

Shes restricted from doing some kind of hard work like her counterpart.
Nobody wants to teach her how to mould blocks, as she is expected to do light jobs, just to keep her body sound inorder to attract the unknown rich in law.

Educating her is to add value to her, inordee to attract her class of men.

The society judges her by her look, but all they ask," can she even make a good wife?"
"Can she cook?"
"Can she wash after fixing all thoes nails?"
"Is she really intelligent?".

For the Nigerian girl child marriage is seen as fufillment. If she becomes successful, have her own house and her own car, she is viewed as being too full of herself.

She's expected to be submissive and therefore becoming succefull before marriage in Nigeria society is seen as a taboo.

Poor Nigeria female child.

Instead of grooming girls to aspiring to greater things in life or even secular achievements, girls are being groomed to go to husband's house like that's the only good thing they can do in life.

Any little mistake she makes is met with, "Is this what you'd be doing when you go to your husband's house?"

Hence, Husband becomes a Trophy which if she doesnt get, has failed in life.
This is why many women have animosity toward each other instead of focusing on development.
I'm grateful I know better

Thanks sussan, you really understood my point,
It sucks how Nigerian parents see marrying off their daughter as fufillment of their duty, and the big question is after the marriage what next?

E don finish o
Na to begin dey born pikin

A true reflection of the Nigerian female child. Articles like this could spur change when a thought is given to the unfairness the society has carved out for the girl child. Keep it up. I look forward to meeting a social critic of your status.
