• Nasdaq, in collaboration with research firm Celent, has conducted a global study regarding the CIO mindset on R&D and the adoption of new business models by capital markets infrastructure providers.

• The results show that the degree of adoption of specific technologies differs significantly. Whilst 70 per cent of market infrastructure providers use robotic process automation, only 5 per cent apply any kind of distributed ledger technology. However, 70 per cent are in involved in blockchain trials or industry consortia.

• The authors of the study highlight that market infrastructure providers first need to be certain that blockchain will provide enough scalability, security and speed, before the technology can be deployed. Further to this, they concluded that it can be “extremely difficult” to conceive blockchain-based projects that would substitute an existing system, especially within an international exchange.
