GOOD NEWS! Young people infected by HIV now have a 'near-normal' life expectancy!

in #news7 years ago

Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 35 million people worldwide died from HIV, making it one of the top priorities to health research. Since 1996, a treatment called antiretroviral therapy started to show some results. It consists in three or more different pills to be take every day. Originally, these medicine aiming to slow down the virus replication were accompanied to many side effects.

However, a recent study published by the Health newspaper Lancet showed dramatic improvement in the antiretoviral results this past decade. After studying 88,500 young patients from Europe and North America during their first year of treatment, the research showed that the patients who started their treatment between 2008 and 2010 had an expected life expectancy of 78 years, near the average life expectancy in these countries. It is a 10 years improvement compared to those who contracted the disease in 1996!

The most recent antiretrovirals have been shown to present fewer side effects, and to slow down more effectively the progression of the virus.

However, for this treatment to be efficient, it is important that the virus be detected rapidly, before it spreads too much in the body. So, if you know you should go get screened, go do it now! And more important, protect yourself and others!
