4,000 Mile Undersea Cable Completed - Facebook and Microsoft Celebrate!
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy knocked out internet connections and phone service for a lot of people. Servers crashed and everything became chaotic. Out of that chaos was born an idea - the Marea Subsea Cable. The Marea cable connects Bilbao, Spain to Virginia Beach, VA, crossing over 4000 miles (about 6400 kilometers) at a depth of over 17,000 feet. Marea is the Spanish word for "tide".
The Marea cable is the most technologically advanced of its kind, at a speed of 160 terabits per second - over 16 million times that of the average home internet connection. Enough to transmit over 17 million HD videos at the same time. The project was conducted by Microsoft, Facebook, and Telxius (a global telecom infrastructure company).
The cable is designed to integrate with a host of technologies and is designed with the flexibility to add support for evolving new technologies. It will be used to enhance Microsoft's cloud-based services and development of new VR technologies for Facebook.
Work on the cable began in August of 2016 and was completed two days ago, on September 21st. Here's to a future of faster internet and less downtime!
