Donald Trump and Pope Concur: Fight For Baby Charlie Gard Against Court Ruling To Terminate His Life

in #news7 years ago (edited)

There is a sad and infuriating case about an ill baby named Charlie Gard.

Little Charlie suffers from something called Mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome and struggles to breath unaided.

Doctors at Great Ormond Street hospital want Charlie to "die with dignity". But parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates want to take Charlie to the US for experimental therapy in the hopes of saving his life.

They've even raised £1.3 million ($1.68) for the treatment on this GoFundMe campaign:

However, a High Court judge in London has told them they are not allowed to take the baby to the US for treatment. And further, three Court of Appeal judges upheld that ruling and three Supreme Court justices dismissed a further challenge by Charlie's parents.

A statement issued by the European Court of Human Rights said it "endorsed in substance the approach by the domestic courts and thus declared the application [to leave the UK to seek treatment in the US] inadmissible."

From the Sun:

Responding to today's decision, a Great Ormond Street spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with Charlie's parents on receipt of this news that we know will be very distressing for them.

"Today's decision by the European Court of Human Rights marks the end of what has been a very difficult process and our priority is to provide every possible support to Charlie's parents as we prepare for the next steps.

"There will be no rush by Great Ormond Street Hospital to change Charlie's care and any future treatment plans will involve careful planning and discussion."

US President Donald Trump had this to say on Twitter:

So many of the responses in this tweet are downright reprehensible, in my opinion. The lack of recognition of the value of human life shown in many of the respondents of this tweet is disturbing to me. People seem to take any opportunity to be contrarians to Trump -- even when he's talking about trying to save the life of a sick baby, they MUST disagree.

I'm with Brian on this one:

There is reportedly a hospital in the States that is offering to treat Charlie at no charge, yet the London and European courts say no -- Charlie is not allowed to fly to the US and must die.

My thoughts

This is totalitarian cruelty.

The Pope has said Charlie’s parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates should be allowed to “accompany and treat their child until the end”, and I cannot agree more.

What right do the governments of Europe and the UK have to force this baby to die when his family is willing and financially able to do whatever they can to try and save his life?

These fascist governments have taken custody of this baby away from his parents solely for the sake of killing it.

I cannot think of something so morally evil, and I am honestly shocked that a supposedly modern Western government would even allow such a thing to be proposed, let alone actually rule in the favor of such a proposal.

What do you think?

This is obviously a very emotionally charged story.

But I want to know your opinion.

Should these parents be allowed to pursue any opportunity to save their baby son's life? Or is the government right to sentince this baby to die?

Tell me what you think.

Poor little guy! It shouldn't be their decision!

If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.

Hope for the best.

Oh this melts my heart as a mother i would feels so lost and hurt for my sick child ugh just melts my heart

I find the situation rather appaling. Except that Trump has decided to pour on some shame on the court system of the UK. Maybe it's time Canada makes itself a republic.
