Hurricane Harvey Update: Houston 8/27/17

in #news7 years ago

For the past three days, the Texas Gulf Coast has been enduring the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. In my area close to Houston, this has meant almost continuous tornado warnings, torrential rain, and continuous flood watches.

"Hopes for an immediate respite from Harvey's wrath seem unlikely as the National Weather Service calls the flooding 'unprecedented' and warns things may become more dire if a record-breaking 50 inches of rain falls on parts of Texas in coming days." -CNN

In areas like Houston, this is particularly dangerous. We can go ages without rain, but when we have a torrential downpour it typically floods at least once a year in some areas and takes time to recover.

I actually found a live stream of news coverage, which is refreshing. Historically, we haven't received much news coverage, even during Hurricane Ike when many of us were without resources for five days or more.

Some of the worst damage seems to be further down the coast where Harvey made direct contact. Many areas were completely swept away.

Inner Houston continues to flood. Many are volunteering their boats and aiding in water rescue efforts for those stranded in the city.

Closer to home, this is a sinkhole that's opened up on the road that runs behind my neighborhood as other roads in the surrounding areas begin to give out. At my area of the Brazos River we have not seen flooding. We continue to watch with the reminder of the 100-year-record flood we experienced last year, as we are expecting rain to continue till Tuesday or Wednesday.

Texans have an amazing power to endure and help one another in times of tragedy and I know this will be no different. It's always amazing seeing our community come together and I would like to get involved in relief efforts once the storm subsides.

Glad your safe been thinking of the people there having to endure this

stay safe

Thank you @tattoodjay <3 there will be much to do once the storm subsides. Till then we are hanging in there and making sure there are enough water rescue resources downtown.

Lets hope the rain eases off and the flooding subsides quickly, thoughts with all the people there

My brother lives in Houston near Rice University, are the phone lines all open or if I try to call will it just jam up emergency communications from people trying to get help?

Try to call, I think the only thing overloaded is 911. Hope everything is well!

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

They've started issuing volunteer/mandatory evacuations to specific areas

I talked to my brother and he is safe where he lives but I could hear weather alerts and warnings going out over his TV as we were talking. Thank you for the update!

~I'm glad you made it through safely @sarahtops9000 ♥~
