In the #goodnews today German researchers at The Leaf Republic are making 100% organic disposable plates from banana leaves. In the production process no additional chemicals are added and the plates are completely degradable, leaving no waste behind. The vision of Leaf Republic is to create a world where packaging is much more efficient, friendly to nature and the environment.

Right now you can buy some from their online shop for about 10 euro for a peace. Not for everyone's budget, as I imagine. Hopefully with time it will be mass produced and the price will drop dramatically. Actually in India people are already making leaf plates, independently. I imagine the production price there is much lower.

Banana leaves have a wide range of applications because they are large, flexible, waterproof and decorative. They are used for cooking, wrapping and food-serving in a wide range of cuisines in tropical and subtropical areas. - Wikipedia
