SOLA, or why Steemit still doesn't have any serious competition?

[Текст на српском] It's easy to fall in love with Steemit. The idea is extraordinary, and anyone who invests a little time and creativity, can be well rewarded. But then, why does it not have some competition in sight?

The main reason is that a good idea is not easy to implement. At the time I have discovered Steemit, at the end of August 2016, two similar social networks were announced: Synereo — is still in development, and Yours, which has only recently started to work using the Bitcoin Cash transactions.

Nexus began with a scantily work, but did not cause the expected interest probably because of the announcement that administrators “retain the priviledge to delete messages without warning”.

This could then be the text about the programming genius, Daniel Larimer, who succeeded in making an imperfect but functional ecosystem capable of evolving, and in the context of which all of us are more or less acquainted. But let's see, first of all, is there anyone else who knows how to program so skillfully.

Sola impressions: “Twitter” that pays?

Sola.ai is presented as a decentralized social platform, the “social layer” (Sola is the abbreviation of SOcial LAyer) where it is possible to post your content, make your own applications and receive awards in cryptocurrency, called SOL. It would be nice to immediately recommend another paying platform, but after the first 24 hours, I can only offer you impressions…

The content can be uploaded in a format of cards composed of a picture and 140 characters of text. You can upload links, videos (up to 10 MB) or polls in messages. Messages can have multiple pages. However, a 140-character limit will make this format closer to those accustomed at being short in expression.

Each day, you receive a certain number of “action points”, in the instructions also listed as “Attention Points”, so you can vote for other cards. When you spent points, you will not be able to create new content. To earn more AP, you need to review new content, share information off the platform, or wait for the next day to get a daily bonus.

As with Steemit, the new content can only be voted in the first 7 days.

Interface

If you thought the navigation on the Stimit was imperfect, you should see Sola! The platform was obviously intended primarily for smartphones, but it has been done quite spartan, so it is necessary to read the instructions. For example, there is a button for the next tab, but not for the previous one. If you want to return to the previous page, you need to shake the phone! Seriously!

To track channels or people that seem interesting to you, to create a channel, edit a card, and almost everything else, you should first read the FAQ and Terms of Service. You also have the flags for inappropriate content, just like in Steemit, but they are reviewed by administrators, which means that censorship is still possible and that there is centralized “control” of the content. In my opinion, leaving the control of content to the community, as in Steemit, is a better choice, regardless of how “fuzzy” it can look.

Privacy

It's likely that the platform's ability to accurately detect your location, even if you do not want it, would be the least appealing. It won't be a bother for a majority, since the “treacherous” smartphones already show your location wherever you are. However, there remains an unpleasant impression that no choice is left.

Conclusion

Unlike other attempts to create the Steemit competition, Sola is at least functional. The platform claims that nearly 700,000 members are already there. Earnings is still not easy to determine, since the value of the cryptocurrency Sol will only be determined after the completion of the initial coin offering (ICO) sales process.

Recommendation? Not without reservations. Try it. Especially if you're a Twitter addict. Everything is better than a centralized monster…
