Actually, they have tried several times before. If you do not remember, after the WWII the Iranian oil industry was briefly nationalized, under Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, until a US and UK-backed coup d'état deposed Mosaddegh and brought back foreign oil firms. And Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as a Shah of Iran. That caused an Iranian revolution in 1979, and another western attempt 1980-1988 with their friend… wait for it… Saddam Husein!
