The End of Net Neutrality. What now?

Sourced from the New York Times:

"Ajit Pai, the chairman of the commission, said the rollback of the rules would eventually help consumers because broadband providers like AT&T and Comcast could offer people a wider variety of service options. Mr. Pai was joined in the 3-to-2 vote by his two fellow Republican commissioners."

Ahahaha. Riiiiight. "Wider variety of service options." Sure.

So what now? Well, last week, I wrote an article about a new dev team working on a project called Substratum.

It's basically decentralized free internet, running on any browser. Check it out here:

Projects like this need our backing now more than ever. We need a decentalized internet that's accessable for all.

Let me know what you think in the comments. With a project like Substratum in the works, do we even need to be upset about the end of net neutrality? We can just build a better one.

Thank you for posting this No need to be upset, building a better one is the way to go. I applaud the developing team @substratum and give them a standing ovation. Projects like this needs backing to move forward, and to allow others to use a decentralized free internet, and be able to use any browser, I can hardly wait.

This project looks solid and will be great for so many people who don't have access to the internet. It's time to change the world! 😀

@khackett I agree with you 100% It is time to change the world and help others to access the internet

I consider myself to have been lucky enough to be in the right age group to be in the last wave of early adopters of internet technology at least in Australia.

I know the efforts as an early teen dialling into a bbs and convincing a sysop that we should be granted entry to the ASCII designed interface,no netscape, no explorer, no chrome, no wiki.

Playing those door games and perhaps if lucky getting access to things other teens didn't know existed yet.

This was the decentralised internet no one bbs had everything finding what you wanted took work.

Today the net we know is an amazing system the world is at our finger tips but the structure behind it is so very, very vulnerable the net has gone from decentralised to distributed and now risks being dominated.

Check out this vid from Juice News Media it makes a really good argument for net neutrality.

That video was great, thank you for sharing it with me.
I've been studying computer science lately and ran across a great lecture on information hierarchy. The instructor said that the web is designed so that no data is more important than any other.

So, it is designed correctly, but bandwidth is still a factor that can be controlled by someone other than yourself. That to me is a vulnerability that the first architects of the internet didn't really consider to be a threat at the time. We can fight for net neutrality all we want, but at this point in the antiquated game, money wins all. Until there's an alternative. I do believe net neutrality will be repealed. Cable and internet companies are losing more and more money to our new systems (ie blockchain, streaming ad free tv with roku, ad blocker browsers etc). They are getting desperate to regain control.

When I look at what I want to invest in, I carefully consider what the new technology does and if there's a need for it. If net neutrality is repealed, we're gonna need a new internet. 😑
