👙Dictating liberty / A" burkini ban" on muslim woman👙

in #news8 years ago (edited)

As a Canadian citizen two of our closest allies - the United States and France which are both democratic countries , have some decidely different political and social philosophies. Yet both continue struggling with how to deal with each others cultures as our borders become less restrictive.
As a growing number of people in the U.S. have voiced their desire to keep out foreigners, latching onto Donald Trump's derision of Mexican immigrants and also his call to temporarily ban all muslims from entering that country.
Now in France , politicians atempting to enact a" burkini ban ", with police challenging and fining muslim woman who choose the covered up swimsuits instead of your so-called "secular" beachwear.

All Canada can do is try to show to show a good example. And in the US there is still time for the majority to reject such dangerous views.
In france the heavy handed actions of police enforcing it - are unbecomeing a society that has long celebrated acceptance.
Now the argument has been made that banning the" burkini "is an attempt to empower muslim woman who are being told what to wear by male religious leaders. BUT how empowering is it to have government and police , instead, dictating their attire!?
There are complicated civil liberties involved , and attitudes that will not change with a stroke of a pen.
It is evident that in France ,the land of Liberte`a line has been crossed.
One does not defend liberty by violateing it! And the old saying 2 wrongs dont make a right.
Now i just learned France has just overturned the ban in Niece with the judge saying the ban canot be justified as there are no proven risks of disruption to public order. And heres a link to that story which just came out! http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/09/french-court-overturns-illegal-burkini-ban-nice-160901202423711.html
My question to you is what do you think of all this?! Shouldnt woman , no matter what the religion , be allowed to decide for themselves!? Why is it so wrong if no muslim man told her to do so, but she does it because SHE wants to, its her faith and what SHE wants to wear! I welcome all coments. Thanks!

Sort:

They can wear whatever they want to wear, this is kind of silly before people were scandalized because bikinis showed to much skin and now they're scandalized because burkinis show too little skin. I think it's time people started to grow up.

Well, never wonder why the muslim faith, never asked women to wear anything say 15years back ?

Also don't forget that there was a terrorist act at Nice last 14th of July which kill 100's people, so wearing a burkini is seen by many not as an expression of faith but as just plain provocation.
And common sense should dictate to not put oil on fire in the current context, unless you really want to get attention... Hence wanting to get attention for a woman in that sort of way is even contradictory to the reason why she wears that burkini in the first place (which is to not get attention from men... well I guess it is a fail then...)

ps: Concerning politicians, Presidential election in less than a year: They will say whatever they think people want to hear...

Thanks for your coments! I might add that a man in a truck ploughed down 86 people killing them, true , but woman wearing burkinis or any other types of clothing cant be blamed for the violent or hostile reactions of other people.! And yes like all politicians since time began i agree with you there...

IF Muslim men are telling the women they have to wear the burkini at the beach, then banning them will simply force the women to stay home as the men will not allow them to wear the alternate. The woman's choice removed twice over, first by the male family member, secondly by the state.

If the woman is making the choice to wear it on her own then the state is imposing it's choices on her.

The bigger issue here has more to do with male dominated society taking as a right to impose control over women's choices of clothing. That is what needs to stop.

Yes indeed! And did you see in the last photo theres 4 male police officers , totally rediculous, to one muslim woman! Also these woman are not terrorists! And shouldnt be treated as such simply because they are muslim!

well she's not getting treated as such because she is Muslim, it's because she has the audacity to be a woman and Muslim. Muslim women make for an acceptable target in the current environment.

Sorry, but France is a democracy where Man and Woman have the exact same right... if a woman is imposed something against her will, this is called abuse... and is punished by law...
So I don't see why french government should bend over a something which are imposed by men to women in an abusive way.
Hence banning the burkini is a good choice in that case.
I mean, if it is a form of abuse, then it should be banned in the same way as excision is illegal (as it is a way to remove feminity in women, through mutilation or by hiding the whole female attribute (well actually the whole body)

Also allowing that, is allowing peer pressure against more liberal muslim women to force them to wear it.

Let's see, France is a democracy where men and women have the same right but its the right choice to ban women from wearing certain articles of clothing because there is an assumption that they are being forced to wear it because heaven forbid that a woman make a choice of her own.

So, either the men from the state force her not to wear the article of clothing or males in her family force her to wear it.. where exactly does her right to choose come in this democratic society? I'm not seeing it.

Do you not see the inherent abuse in this approach?

How soon people forget things like the Bikini had to be modeled by a PAID PROSTITUTE because no actual model at the time would dare wear that in public.

Now, we put them on out tiny girls and send them out to be viewed by all.

I guess that the WAR ON MODESTY has begin. Soon, perhaps guys everywhere will be forced to wear "Daisy Duke" shorts like AXL ROSE from Guns and Roses used to. What is this world coming to?!?!?!

that is a big part of the problem Guys wont be forced to wear what they don't want but think they have the right to make demands on women. And it's not just Muslim men.

Good (and probably very valid) point.
Additionally, it is not just Muslim women who prefer to keep themselves covered.
Some may be forced, but some women (even Muslim) may still prefer not to be "naked" in public.
Whether it is a GOVERNMENT or a RELIGION, a choice for the individuals should still exist in matters like this.

if you want to avoid being naked in public, may-be the beach isn't really for you... (you might say it is a matter of choice, but being on the beach you will mostly see almost naked people)...

15 years ago, I was going to naturist beaches... and it is considered rude (and would much likely be considered as some kind of pervert) to go to that kind of beaches with cloth on, no one ever questioned that...

Next question, is it allowed for a woman wearing a burkini to go to a hamam when there are men ? (probably not... lol, one might try though... and see how tolerance plays in that situation...)
