This Week In Ukraine: Poroshenko Stateside, Saakashvili In Kiev And Famine Remembrance

in #news7 years ago

From Ukraine’s famine/genocide memorial in Kiev, Josh Friedman discusses this week’s news in Ukraine, which also happens to be playing out in the United States. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and newfound challenger Mikheil Saakashvili effectively swapped places with the currently stateless Saakashvili returning to Kiev and Poroshenko heading to New York for a UN General Assembly speech and a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Of course, Russia is very much on everyone’s minds, and Poroshenko’s speech at the UN provides an opportunity to discuss Ukraine’s conflicts with Russia — past and present. One overlooked, yet ongoing dispute is whether the approximately 10 million starvation deaths that occurred in 1932-1933 amounted to genocide.

Filmed in front of the Holodomor memorial in Kiev on Sept. 21, 2017. For a little background about the famine and the memorial, take a look at my previous post.
