Sex Toy Maker Settles Privacy Lawsuit For $4 Million

in #news8 years ago (edited)

Standard Innovations is a popular company that is known for producing a variety of sex toys, and for this case, it's their products known as "We Vibe" vibrators that have Bluetooth capability which have come under fire. They just recently reached a $4 million settlement in their privacy lawsuit, that had been launched against the company; claiming that it spied on the sexual habits of the users who bought its vibrator products.

The toys from Standard Innovations, are designed to be able to use Bluetooth technology in order to connect to the We-Connect app and this connection enables someone else to control the vibrator themselves, adjusting the intensity for the user, even though they might not be with the person/user at the time.

Thus far, Standard Innovations has admitted that they are guilty of no wrongdoing.

However, despite their cry of innocence, they are still going to pay. It's alleged that the company collected data that related to the frequency of usage for customers, and that this data was linked with email addresses that had been registered initially with the app. Therefore, it's suggested that the firm could link the information together and be able to understand the sexual habits of users.

Standard Innovation has ensured the public that they do value the privacy of their customers and they insist that they have enhanced their private notice and increased security for their app. Interestingly, though the company is Canadian, the lawsuit itself was filed in an Illinois court last fall. The filing was only made on behalf of two female users. They were arguing that the company demonstrated a blatant disregard for the privacy of users in such a way that allegedly violated numerous US laws. Customers of the vibrator in question, and the We-Connect app could be looking at getting thousands of dollars in remedy as a result of the recent settlement.
