Schools In The US Plan To Start Using Drones For Safety And Security

in #news6 years ago (edited)

The attorney general of Ohio just recently announced plans for schools in the state to be able to use drones as a part of their safety efforts. Specifically, there are 6 drones that the Ohio Bureau for Criminal Investigation owns and they will be allowing the schools to access high-quality images taken by the drones, that show the school property.

The plan is for the evidence to be used whenever law enforcement might be responding to claims of some violent incident taking place.

The attorney general has encouraged schools to get the pictures taken by the drones so that any officers who respond to their school will have more information about that location.

As for who the images will be available to, it's alleged that only law enforcement will be able to access them and that they will be able to do so only through an official law enforcement database; only for legitimate reasons. But we also know that previous investigations have found that officers across the country have been found to abuse confidential databases.

The 'drones for safety' initiative is now well underway, as the drones have already started taking images of some schools in the state. Just last week they reportedly started with schools in northeast and central Ohio. Might we soon see a growing number of schools around the country start to adopt the same safety surveillance efforts?

There are some schools that have already started using drones for recreational purposes, to film sports events and training efforts etc. Though there aren't many that have started to use drones for safety and security purposes. One school in Texas previously considered using drone technology, just as those in Ohio are now doing, and some others have indicated they plan to as well. It's likely that soon more will be following in doing the same.

Aside from using drones for safety purposes or filming sports and other campus events, they've also been using them to map school construction projects, been promoting drone usage for research purposes, and more. Drone technology is proving to be wildly diverse in that there are so many industries that have now been able to adopt it, benefiting from putting it to use in various ways. They've been delivering food, medical supplies, and mail, helping fix roads, assisting in fighting fires, helping to protect animals by assisting conservation efforts, and more.

The plan for increased drone use at schools is said to be stemming from the issue of school shootings in the country and the growing pressure that's been placed on schools to implement increased safety measures.

Another example of automation taking away jobs :(

How is this going to help prevent school shootings?

A person could still do the exact same stuff that they'd do without a drone flying 100m above their head. How will it prevent a shooter from entering a school with a gun (that they could hide in a backpack or inside a jacket) and open fire inside the school, where the drone doesn't fly?

The only way it might help is deterrence and a better/faster police response, but that's still not going to prevent shootings from starting. When someone is trying to kill you, mere seconds count.

gov initiatives aren't required to make much sense 😂

Lol true! They're only required to give the people a false sense of security.

I honestly don't think that drones will help with that, since drones are not necessarily quiet and everyone will behave until the drone is around the corner.. I think the normal cameras will help more with that, but in schools privacy is always a big issue too! I think the general idea is great and it could work for sure, but maybe there are other, more "old-fashioned" ways that would work better in this case :)

I believe this is an awesome idea. Their shall be no hiding place especially for drugs, students who hide and take drugs , drones would be the perfect measure to get them and help them. Technology should be used in the best way it can .

This sounds quite good especially due to the several cases of violence and shootings in schools. The safety of kids is the ultimate. They are tomorrow.

While I am all in for increasing security standards, one has to ask whether this direction is the right one. There have already been times of full observation for the sake of security and safety. Usually, that doesn't end up all that well either.

eso lo veo excelente, es una forma de mantener la seguridad por lo que a su cedido en los últimos meses, la era moderna en sus mano, saludo u gracias por su apoyo

Exceptional inspiration ... using drones as a cctv to make the area more affordable.

This is one of my dreams until now! To have this kind of drone! I would like to use on my everyday Dlive blog! Reporting!!! (^_^)

Great idea to protect the safety of students, i pray for peace to all our families and children thanks for your wonderful post and have a great weekend
