Chinese Authorities Crackdown On VPNs

China's Great Firewall Just Got Bigger

Just this past weekend, Chinese authorities decided to further outlaw the use of VPNs in the country, use of them will now require approval by the government. The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said that they wanted to clean-up the internet connections in the country and that was the reason for the move.

The new rules will be in place until March 31st of next year and they go into effect immediately.

Many well-known websites have been blocked in China, but a number of citizens no doubt were using virtual private networks VPNs in order to access those sites. But now they will be at even more risk if they want to go looking for sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube. The VPNs had already been subject to scrutiny by the state in China but now they are even more so. It's alleged that these new rules are questionably vague and therefore it is uncertain how the state might go about enforcing them.

Internet censorship is condemned by many around the world for a number of reasons, one of the most glaringly obvious is because it seemingly violates the natural right to freedom of expression. China isn't the only state that looks to control what it's citizens look at either, a number of other countries routinely censor their internet access for citizens as well.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in China has said that for the next year or so they are going to be moving against internet providers that are caught providing unauthorized internet connections. China has an internet population that is estimated to be upwards of 600 million and it's said that most of those users are using mobile phones in order to get connected.

not sure why @jubi and @asshole flagged this post? ..... more flag trolls?

you don't get to speak for millions of people and assume how they feel about the issue #controlfreak

Do you even know what steemit is?? it's a transparent/censorship free social media platform and yet here you are flagging my post because you support censorship?
Funny.

Yeah i flag ,and i know i m small .so i just want you can see my reply through put attention to flag. i respect you, just one thing ,hope you can get it right when post . one post can expression bad emotion. say sorry for my flag ,cancel.

I did get it right, I posted what happened according to the news. They are cracking down on VPN and they shouldn't because the government should NOT be in the business of telling people what sites they can and cannot look at online. And for you to think they should be doing that, surprises me considering you are here on this ANTI-censorship platform steemit

Jubi are you saying that you thought a flag was flagging something important? Something you wanted others to see?

This is huge news coming out of China, not too surprising as they have been cracking down on more and more of its accessibility and potential cultural, as well as financial potential.
Thanks for sharing, I really look forward to see what the people will do. Are they going to start delving more and more into the TOR system???

All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

People will always find a way to voice their freedom of speech and creativity. The harder you suppress, the bigger the natural willingness to fight.

People will find a way out. There are always way out. But this is a sad news for freedom.

Right, they want to clean up the internet and i suppose that India removed their highest denominations because they want to eliminate the black market. All is done in the name of control.... but they lead us on into believing its in our best interest. Good article by the way.. thanks for the news.
