Things I Would Buy Instead of an iPhone XsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #news7 years ago

Yesterday, from their spaceship amphitheater, Apple revealed the iPhone X. They called is X for 10, which is based on the 10th year anniversary of the original launch of the iPhone. They also announced that the price of the iPhone X would be starting at $999.

For those of you who wonder why they put the price at $999 instead of $1000, it is called psychological pricing. The theory that having something priced at just below the rounded up number makes the buyer feel that they are getting a better deal. In the buyer's mind, they are buying something at $900 and not $1000, even though there is only a $1 difference from making it $1000.

Now, for some people, $1000 doesn't seem like a lot. And, for some people, $1000 is more than they will make in a year. It is a lot of money for something that has only a 2-3 year expected lifespan (if you are lucky).

So, the question is: What would you buy with $1000

From a prepper stand point, there are a lot of things that I would buy, instead of a $1000 phone.

Here is a list of thing that came to mind.

  1. CZ Scorpion Evo 9mm
  2. 5000 rounds of 9mm ammo
  3. 3 - Six Gallon Crown Berkey Water Filter System
  4. 5 Homestead "Lifeline" Package seed buckets
  5. 6 Month Supply of Mountain House Lunch and Dinner Entries
  6. 6 month subscription to BattleBox at Pro Plus level
  7. 12 month subscription to Knife Box at both TacticalBox and KnifeBox

Sure, some of these items would only cover 6 months to a year, but the return would be longer. 6 months of survival food that lasts 7 years at the low end and maybe 20-30 years at the high end. The food is there for you when you need it and you only need clean water to use it.

On the other side, you could have 5 Homestead "Liveline" Package seed buckets. One of the buckets gives you enough seeds to grow 40,000 lbs of food. 5 would give you enough seeds for 5 years, without replanting the seeds you made from the first bucket.

The water filtration system would last you 3000 gallons on a single filter cartridge. Instead of buying 2 extra systems, you could use that money to have extra filters to replace worn out ones. At 2 for $100, you could buy enough to give you 40,000 gallons of fresh clean water. That would be 57,000 days of water for the average person. Or basically, more water than the average person could drink in a life time.

Most preppers learn that 2,000 rounds of ammo is a goal for safety in a TEOTWAWKI situation. Shoot wisely and don't waste ammunition. $1,000 would give you twice that goal in 9mm ammunition. If you have a pistol and a rifle that both shoot 9mm, then you could load up plenty of magazines for both.

Finally, I put box subscriptions. The knife subscription for 12 months would give you enough knives to last a lifetime. You wouldn't need for any other knives. The BattleBox would give you enough gear to get your prepping started very well. Sure, you have to wait each month for the box to arrive, but that would also be part of the enjoyment of the money spent. Each month for 6-12 months, you would get a new surprise box full of stuff that will probably last longer than the iPhone.

So, what would you buy instead of an iPhone for $1000

Nice list. I was curious what the shelf life is on that bucket of seeds? Also, do you hunt with 9mm or is that for self defense?

Seeds normally have a 2-3 year shelf-life. However, if you freeze the, they can last 5 years or more. Hence the seed vault in the great frozen tundra.

9mm would be for self-defense. It doesn't have the range or impact for hunting, unless you get up really close (relatively speaking). You could get a .308 or 30-30 in an AR-15 style instead of bolt action. That would give you a good hunting gun and a self-defense gun. However, I wouldn't use it as a home intruder gun in normal times, because the bullet would probably go places you don't want it to go.

I have an AR-15 in .223, but have been thinking of getting a good old 30-30 winchester or marlin. Much more stopping power and surprisingly ammo is not much more expensive. I have 2 9mm pistols and a .45, but yea .45 ammo is much more expensive.

I know there is a great debate between 9mm and .45.

I see it this way.

  1. Cheaper cost of 9mm
  2. More available, due to the cheaper cost
  3. Lighter and larger capacity magazines

If your aim is good, even a .22 will kill, but I would rather be sure with a 9.
Having a bullpup or sub-machine gun using 9mm and possibly the same magazine, just adds to the usefulness of the caliber.

How I would equip myself.

  1. 9mm pistol (compact) - 6/7 rounds
  2. 9mm pistol (full-size) - 15 rounds
  3. 12 gauge pump shotgun - 7 rounds
  4. lever action .308 rifle - 5-7 rounds
  5. 9mm bull pup/sub rifle - 30+ rounds

If I can't get all the jobs done with that setup, then the job is too big for one person. ;)

I agree with you, there are a lot of things I would do with that money.
But... its not my money.

very good post. thank you for sharing the story, success is always friends! I want to like you post. but not yet. guide this friend! From @all-aceh

Things I would buy instead of an iPhone X: LITERALLY ANYTHING

I had to narrow the list somewhere. ;) LOL

Those seed buckets look awesome, BTW.

That was a bit of luck finding those. I really didn't think I could find something close to being able to say "$1000 worth of seeds", that would be useful.

Interesting note, if you didn't click through. It includes tobacco as one of the crops.

This $ 999 Honda generator to power your fridge and sump pumps, well pumps, AC etc when your power gets knocked out by a hurricane. https://steemit.com/news/@offgridlife/the-perfect-generator-for-when-you-lose-power

Ah... good one. I should have added a generator.

Or a solar panel and deep cycle battery

I could think of endless things I would use it for other than a phone. I would supercharge my homestead, buy some livestock, then live off of it. lol.

Make a list.
I'm sure some self-help guru would say that all dream fulfillment starts with a list.

Almost everything I do starts with a list. I find old lists wedged in corners and under things ever time I clean. Lists are great.

I would buy the galaxy note 8 and some accessories. In all honesty though I'm hoping to use that phone to start taking some stock photos, post more easily on steemit, and start making youtube videos again. At the end of the 2-3 lifespan of the phone I hope to have made at least that back for just my efforts here on steemit!

Good plan.

However, I have an old Canon I bought over 5 years ago that still takes great pictures and videos. It even has a feature to upload to a wi-fi network, but that takes longer than just popping out the SD card and putting in my PC. The PC, which is also over 5 years old. Only the software is newer.

Nice list, way more valuable than an IPhone. Liking the scorpion. Not sure what I would buy, maybe a sound system for the living room, performance car parts, probably a bottle of Blue Label Johnny Walker, Maybe some camping equipment. Shit man, too many thing better than that!

I held the Scorpion at a gun show a few months back.
I need STEEM to take off so I can get one. :D
