Big Sunspots Incoming, Win Tickets to the Conference
The Earth facing disc has a couple of dark coronal holes, but nothing else is going. Earth's magnetic shield is calm. Tonight should see a pickup of geomagnetic storms. Of course, this could also mean a pickup of earthquake and volcanic activity.
The big news is the the large sunspots starting to crest on the disc and they look very active. This group of sunspots gave us the X-Class Solar Flares, that while short and mostly missed, managed to move Hurricane Irma. Of course, if we get one in the next couple of days, then Hurricane Maria might be doing some moving of her own.
Hopefully, the Earth Facing Quiet will take back over and make these sunspots a nothing burger.
Of course, a large X-Class Solar Flare hitting on September 23 would probably freak everyone out looking at the stars. Granted, it we got an X-Class large enough to take out the power grids, then everyone SHOULD freak out.
- So, space weather cosmic rays are even more dangerous than CERN. Good to know. Scary to know.
Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the Sun's photosphere that appear as spots darker than the surrounding areas. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentrations of magnetic field flux that inhibit convection. Coronal holes are areas where the Sun's corona is colder, hence darker, and has lower-density plasma than average because there is lower energy and gas levels.
