ARRL is the national association for Amateur Radio in the US. Founded in 1914 by Hiram Percy Maxim as The American Radio Relay League, ARRL is a noncommercial organization of radio amateurs. ~ http://www.arrl.org/about-arrl

When most people think about radio, they just think of music stations. Of course, I'm guessing that in a few decades, the word "radio" will be just as mysterious as "VCR". However, radio is about listening to broadcast signals, whether from a large commercial tower or back and forth between child walkie talkies.

But, when ARRL talks about Amateur Radio, they are talking about Ham Radio.

Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. ~ http://www.arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio

As mentioned, ham radio is a popular hobby. Like other forms of two-way radio communication, it was even more popular back in the days before cellphones. For people out in remote areas camping, logging or just living off the grid. Ham radio is an important communication method of communication.

It is also good for communicating with the upside down. But, should only be done with adult supervision.

For preppers and the like minded, ham radio will be the only communication during TEOTWAWKI. This would be especially true in a CME (coronal mass ejection)/EMP(electromagnetic pulse) Bomb SHTF scenario. The basic idea is, all power would be shut down because the electrical grid is vulnerable to overloads. The main pieces to get the electrical grid back on-line are no longer made in the U.S.A. and there are none being stored in case such a disaster happened. It would take 6-9 months for power to start being restored, which is a very long time. Also, most electrical devices that are turned on and/or connected to the grid will also be overloaded. Expectations are that cars, planes and even electrical devices would malfunction or stop working. This is a very bad things.

Of course, if a ham radio operator has their radio connected to their huge antenna and they didn't do any safe guards, they would also be out of commission. The scenario that ARRL and the DoD are practicing assumes that the ham radios are fully functional after a CME happens.

“This exercise will begin with a national massive coronal mass ejection event which will impact the national power grid as well as all forms of traditional communication, including landline telephone, cellphone, satellite, and Internet connectivity,” Army MARS Program Manager Paul English, WD8DBY, explained in an announcement. ~ http://www.arrl.org/news/communications-interoperability-training-with-amateur-radio-community-set

This exercise will have ham radios check in with two military stations so that they can determine who is on-line and how wide spread the simulated damage is. This drill will probably take out all regular ham communication for about 15 minutes.

On the other side of what is going on is the Refuse Fascism protests happening in places across the USA on Nov. 4th.

So, this is basically an extension of every other communist protest going on for the last 20 years. If you take some time and follow the bread crumbs from 305 West Broadway #185, New York, NY 10013, you will find that it leads back to the Green Movement. If you didn't know that the Green Movement is basically backed by communists, well, here is your wake up call.

In the end, this is just a fight between the communist and the socialists with the normal people having to deal with the headaches that they provide. For the most part, the group should be ignored. Their tactics are to create a wall of noise, while other players either destroy property or attack people. The best option is to not engage them at all. Go about your life, enjoy a good college football game or whatever. If a CME did cause a blackout while these protests were going on, the protesters would be the last to know what to do. If it ever comes to a civil war, heading out to where the enemy is waiting, is never a good strategy.

If you are interested in ham, I suggest checking out the ARRL site to get started. If you are interested in protecting things from an CME/EMP start researching electromagnetic field blocking.

I was just posting this video from dahboo7 to the "most censored social network in existence" and had quite a time finding a place I could stick it in. Will post here too. I've talked with our local groups and we have the protections in place but many don't :( It concerns ham radios:

He didn't say anything more than what I posted.
The simulation apparently takes place every year or at least, on a regular basis. It won't actually shut down any power. It will broadcast out for 15 minutes and then everyone checks in. Of course, I'm not sure why it would take 2 days to do that.

Had some text typed in here too, not sure what happened, but was saying I'd just posted this video to "the most censored social network in existence" and had quite a time finding a place on someones comment list to post it. Censorship is so out of control. But have checked with our local groups here and our radios are protected...whew!

How are they protected? Do they have a fuse between the antenna and the radio?
Or are they just handheld radios they put in a Faraday cage?

Not sure, this is what I got back from our local Community Emergency Response Team: "Most of us with hams have duplicates that are in EMP protection. BaoFeng UV5R radios are only $30 these days!" I have our CB's set up here to run off grid, covering 4 mountain tops that give us pretty good local reach and will be getting certified for ham soon. Just never enough time :(
