dTube: EXPOSING Gwyneth Paltrow's "Goop" & Pseudoscience Nonsense

in #news6 years ago

I HATE scams & pseudoscience

So I was thrilled to interview Rae Paoletta, Space Editor at Inverse, who joined me todiscuss pseudoscience scams in the "wellness" sphere, and specifically her investigations of Gwyneth Paltrow's "lifestyle brand" company "Goop," which has marketed all sorts of nonsense products, some even dangerous.

Should this stuff be illegal?

Really good interview. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't think we need to ban these products -- we need to increase buyer awareness and give people better ways of reviewing and spreading information to other consumers.

That being said, if something is found to be harmful and unsafe, yes, it should be illegal.

Anyone agree, disagree?

there are legal complexities to banning these products

I agree, generally.

I think when it comes to banning things, it all comes down to where we draw the line on harmfulness.

Some people think we should ban all things "chemical", but if we did that then we'd all have to mutually agree to living an existence kinda like Bubble Boy. And, as should be pretty apparent by now, American people aren't much predisposed to mutuality or agreement on very much of anything as a cohesive whole.

A lot of things are harmful, but without a doubt deadly, toxic things, and especially those being sold for people to topically apply, as goop onto their skin, would be best banned, imo.

So yeah, I agree. And unpopular opinions are often synonymous with being a hindrance to a corporate profit motive, so there's always going to be that battle to fight.

I think the first commenter @movievigilante had it right, "Goop is full of poop", in more ways than one.

If Gwyneth Paltrow joins up she can be VaginalSteeming

When Gwyneth tells you to buy some of her "Goop"...

I've always thought Goop is full of poop.

All that's said about Goop can also be said about religion.
More even. Religion is not even pseudo-science, it's straight up bullshit and because of it people are doing the far worse things to themself and society, than Goop does. Why is nobody saying a word, when Jews performing completely unnecessary operations on small boys, for example? Why is nobody saying a word, when children being taught that the earth is 6000 years old and stuff like that? That's far more harmful, than Goop in my eyes.
All Goop is doing is selling bullshit to adults, who are completely in charge of what they are doing.
Not FDA approved? So what? So are protein powders. Since when is that an argument?

My thoughts kinda went that way too. I have no idea the best answer either.

Maybe because humans are self-destructive, hypocritical and ludicrous (surely a hyper-critical generalization, a little unfair of me, but maybe still a little bit true), and most of all - you don't touch religion? You're not supposed to, anyway, not without a lot of jeering, threats, and chastisement for your vain and prideful deviation. You don't question God and you don't question his appointed leaders, didn't you know that? It's not like it helps you win friends and influence people, so who would bother?

Oh, and us humans often tend to have a limited attention span and a herd-like mentality to our activism. That's an influential factor too. Our secular gods are our celebrities; that's why we think about them so much.

I'm still happy a pretty sizable portion of us think to look out for the good of all, though. And we care enough to speak up about something when it just doesn't seem ethical or right enough. Religion is, indeed, a huge one of those ethical offenders, it says so right here, and I'm reading line number five on a laundry list of "Naughties" longer than Santa could ever dream of.

Anything that is becoming poisonous to the general public should be made illegal

Like cigarettes, alcohol, most of the over the counter drugs, fast food and so on?

With the preservatives in fast food I should last forever, right? They preserve?

Yeah, let us create more black markets! This is solved with a little regulation (like cigarette packages are forced to display evidence-based health messages) and obviously good education.
