Elon Musk is the greatest car salesman who has ever lived

in #news8 years ago

Tesla reported a stunning, if somewhat complicated, third-quarter earnings beat on Wednesday — $0.71 per share, on an adjusted basis, including an accounting change for the automaker that threw off many analysts who had predicted a big loss.

On a conference call afterward, Musk addressed questions about demand for the Model 3 mass-market car — a $35,000 vehicle that was unveiled in March and has racked up 373,000 preorders. But that car isn't due to hit the street until late 2017 and won't be produced in significant numbers until 2018.

Interest in the Model 3 has been high, and Musk called it one of his biggest priorities at the moment.

"The Model 3 is the most interesting product program in the world, and a lot of suppliers want to be a part of it," Musk said.

But Musk downplayed his efforts to promote the new car and said that Tesla "anti-sells" — doesn't actively push — the vehicle to consumers.

There's a recent article out there about SolarCity and how they're making the latest in solar roof shingles that look realistic. They're glass and look pretty awesome. Musk owns SC btw.

A solar roof wouldnt be much use. I own a few sites that generate power for the Government. My home even has a setup. I am generating 5kwh max on my home system. There is a 90kwh version and a 85kwh of the Tesla. I have read that they only charge 75%. That said - In the peak of summer - the 25 panels on my roof would create a max of 50kwh over 10 sun hours (not enough to fill the car) - and that is assuming you are leaving your car in the garage all day... Cut those number in half for the winter - and adjust for days when snow covers them!

A couple of things from his announcement regarding the solar roof. First, he said that the energy one needs would come from 1/3 personal solar power and 2/3 utility. Whether that was him playing politics or truthful, there's no way renewable energy purists are going to buy that statement.

Second thing, which wasn't actually in the announcement, but some article I read - the solar panels are 2% less efficient than the inefficient solar panels we already have.

Lastly, he said that the cost of the solar roof would be the cost of a normal roof PLUS the cost of electricity. What the heck does that 2nd part mean? The expected cost of electricity for the warranty period (20 years or whatever it is?) He was very subtle about how he said it that I'm not sure people noticed the "plus" part. That is when he lost me, and I zoned out.

So yeah, definitely a good salesman. Its not as good as he makes it sound.
