RE: Al Franken RESIGNS Over Harassment Allegations, Republicans Flip-Flop

in #news7 years ago

There is hypocrisy, and then there is serious unabashed glaring political hypocrisy. And two names that are making that hypocrisy widely known, are the names Roy Moore and Al Franklin. Franken, not Franklin. Roy Moore is a republican running for Senate in Alabama. He's accused of sexual assault by at least 6 people, one of whom not even at the age of consent at the time of the alleged incident. Al Franken is a current Democratic senator who's been accused by LeeAnn tweeden of an unwanted sexual advance, for which he has apologized and she has accepted his apology, but also other accusers of Al Franken have come forward over the last 24 to 48 hours and indeed, Al Franken announced just hours ago that he would be resigning at the end of the year from the US Senate. This has been building up for about 24 hours. Mitch McConnell is the Senate Majority Leader. He demanded that Al Franken resign, and indeed Al Franken did, and more than 30 other Democratic senators also called for Al franken's resignation, again after another woman came forward to accuse Al Franken, and that's fine. We need to be consistent. So if we say Roy Moore should step aside and not be seated in the Senate if he wins, then Al Franken should resign.
Now Al Franken, in his speech today on the Senate resigning, he said that he is not admitting to what he is accused of and that he also has a different recollection of some of these incidents. But long story short, Al Franken is resigning and this is where we get to the glaring hypocrisy. If the point is from someone like Mitch McConnell that the Senate should be clear of people who are serially accused of doing these things, then Al Franken shouldn't be in the Senate and neither should Roy Moore. But Mitch McConnell, who again is the Senate Majority Leader, is right there, was right there for the last 24 hours calling for the resignation of Al Franken. But after initially threatening not to seat Roy Moore in the Senate if Roy Moore wins his election on Tuesday in Alabama, Mitch McConnell has backed off of this now. He has totally flip flopped and now he is saying well listen its going to be up to the people of Alabama to decide, which basically means that Mitch McConnell will seat Roy Moore and he will be a senator. And republicans have found a pretty sneaky way to defend this, and it's repulsive.
There are Republicans defending that Al Franken must go, but Roy Moore can stay if he is elected on Tuesday because they said the following, that this is their argument okay. It's not my argument. Republican voters are saying listen, voters learned of Al franken's misconduct after he was already in the Senate, so they were never able to cast a vote about Al Franken knowing what he was accused of. Roy Moore on the other hand hasn't been elected yet, so voters are going to get to vote on Tuesday already knowing what Roy Moore is accused of. So if they vote for Roy Moore despite knowing about these allegations, we have no choice but to seat him, because he would have been elected by an electorate that knew the accusations of serial sexual assault against Roy Moore. But this is a ridiculous argument because Al Frankens resignation was not called for on the basis of public opinion. So why is anyone even talking about what the voters think.
The question is, do Democrats want Al Franken or Roy Moore in the Senate, based on the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, and the answer has been no from Democrats.democrats saying Al Franken should resign, mostly saying. And democrats saying Roy Moore should step aside and if he wins, should not be seated in the senate. Republicans on the other hand are saying Al Franken should resign , and he has. But mostly other than some few republicans like Jeff Flake, who I mentioned yesterday. Most republicans are saying Franken should go, but if Moore wins in Alabama he's the next senator from Alabama in the US Senate. If the point is that people accused of serial sexual misconduct shouldn't be Senators because of what it means for the Senate to harbor these guys, then they should be saying, if they want to be consistent, Franken shouldn't be in and Moore shouldn't be in. But there not doing that. And at the top of the heap is Donald Trump who recently fully endorsed Roy Moore, and the really sad and funny thing is that those on the left, who are hoping to talk Republicans into taking the moral high ground on this. I hate to break it to you, you can't convince Republicans to do anything based on the moral high ground because it's bogus. Evangelicals voted for Donald Trump. If there were ever a bigger confirmation that the moral high ground is irrelevant for Republicans, it's that evangelicals voted for Donald.
And in the meantime the election is in 5 days on December 12th. People have to actually get out and vote.I think it's just a political calculation tho, because Al Franken is going to be replaced by a democrat since Minnesota Governor's a Democrat. He will appoint a Democrat and a have a special election. The electorate in Minnesota is largely Democratic. They're probably going to vote for a Democrat to replace him. You can say the same thing about John Conyers right now in Michigan. but Roy Moore, the consequence of Republicans backing away from him is that Doug Jones wins that seat, then they lose one right. I think it's all just numbers. Wouldn't that be an argument to not do the double standard. Say Roy Moore can stay if he wins and Al Franken can stay, because if you're going to get rid of Al Franken for another Democrat, that would almost be an argument to just say, let's not even deal with Al Franken because it's going to be a Democrat either way. They're going to have to say that Al Franken has to go. The democrats are doing it too, there's no way to take the opposite approach. There's no doubt it just political posturing. there's nothing we can actually deduce about the supposed moral High ground and family values that Republicans claim to have. Donate, phone bank, and knock on doors if you're in Alabama, because the election is just a few days away.
