Have Juul e-vape cigs become a national epidemic?

in #news6 years ago (edited)

I just returned home from my hunting trip in Nebraska but, while I was there I got into a conversation with a few Middle school and High school teachers about the use of vape ecigs being used while kids are at school. My teacher friends say they have caught multiple students using the popular Juul e-cigs on school property and some even were brave enough to try and get away with this while in the classroom!

The initial set up could get a little costly for a student but the refill cartridges are very cheap and last quite a while.
According to an "action plan" posted on the company website, Juul will stop fulfilling orders from retailers looking to stock its creme, cucumber, fruit and mango flavored Juul pods. However, it will continue to sell its menthol, mint and tobacco flavored pods, as they replicate the experience of a standard cigarette.

Many people feel this will deter young people from using the Juul but, it will also make access to them a little more difficult than just whipping into a 7-eleven convenience store to buy them. Jull actually announcing today that they are deleting social media advertising spots because they fear government crackdowns on their business model if they don’t.

“The lineup of sweeter flavors will only be available through Juul's website, which will employ an age verification system to limit sales to people who are 21 years of age or older. Purchasers will have to provide their name, date of birth, permanent address and the last four digits of their social security number to get the flavored pods. The information has to be verified by a third-party source and will be cross-referenced with public records to confirm the buyer's age.” w4111F57F-3483-4447-AF7C-8B649A7808E7.jpeg
Who really knows what the dangers of this product really are. I actually tried my very first Juul this past weekend while hunting. It has a very nice flavor and I can see why these will make many people quickly addicted to them. If you don’t smoke I suggest you never start using the Juul because I think they will be even harder to stop using than conventional cigarettes and cigars. Teachers I know seemed to be very concerned about the popularity of the Juul.

Now that you’re back in town.... Maybe it’s time for a cigar 😜

It’s nice to be home, my bed feels good right now.

Times are changing really fast @broncnutz and I think unless government regulate these e-cigs they will be a problem to society's health considering they seems to be advertised or told they they are "healthier" than conventional cigars and cigarettes.

You might be right, I don’t know enough about it to make a judgment either way.

I seem to be on the opposite side of all of the opinions stated here. I can understand having an age limit, similar to the age restrictions put on being able to buy cigarettes. As everyone of us knows, this will not stop adolescents from getting whatever it may be that they are inclined to buy. You name it, Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana can be had by all with very little effort, with age and legal status of what is being purchased irrelevant.

Take a deeper look at what is the real reason for these new laws and once again it is $$$$$. Big tobacco companies are the ones that are behind the new regulations. E-vap cigs have cut into their profits. The smoke screen is that e-cigs are causing younger people to pick up a bad habit.
Let's not forget that we were all teenagers once, and with that comes new found independence, and feelings on invincibility. Placing restrictions on any merchandice will not work, and only create a void, joyfully filled by black market entrepreneurs.
Education is the only real option to deter the use of things we don't want our children to be involved with. As parents, we tend to push many of these situations onto the school systems and figure they will handle it. Wrong, as parents it is our responsibility to instruct, guide, and set examples of how we would like our children to behave. Teachers can do their part, but parents must be out in front of issues like this. Even in best case senerioes, kids are still the ones making the final call.

I agree....education of young people is the key.

Thanks for the up-vote and reply!

Was at a funeral this past Mon. and Tues., and when I kicked up the computer today and logged on to Steemit I was curious to see how you did pheasant hunting. From the pics I would say you did pretty well. Ran into my brother in-laws, John and Pat, big hunters. they had several pics on their camera of deer they have been scouting and had a couple of pictures of them. Unreal, I should have downloaded to my phone and shared with you, I think you would have enjoyed. One was of a deer with one of the biggest racks I have ever seen. The rack was still covered in velvet. The other one was of a huge Piebald Buck. Will get the pics from them and share down the road. They are both from NJ and the deer season doesn't open until Dec 3rd.

I go to college in New York and I can say that Juuls have most definitely become an epidemic. In one of my classes alone there are three guys that hit their juuls in the middle of the lecture right there in their seats. Its pretty crazy, I dont know why they dont just take a step outside to hit it.

Ive also spoken to multiple people that have said that they never smoked a cigarette before but even still they began to smoke Juuls and now believe theyre addicted to nicotine

I gotta admit, they tasted awesome but I’m sure that’s all part of the grand master plan to get a person hooked. They are so small....kids can hide them easy.

I really know nothing about this, but....

I'm in SE Asia where there is very little smoking to be seen. But I do see these vape things. All of the sudden a random person is in a big cloud.

Not too long ago I was out to dinner with friends. We where outside and the people a couple of tables away were doing this and the "smoke" billowed into us a few times. I was thinking it was pretty nice! It was some kind of fruity seeming thing and was not really bothersome like actual smoke.

I have not noticed this with kids here, but I have definitely noticed it.

Hi @broncnutz, hope everything is well with you. We're in the midst of planning anarchaforko again this year, only two weeks left to purchase early bird special tickets and it wouldn't be the same without you!

I'm not 100% positive i can come out there for either event yet. I should know more in late December. Thanks for thinking of me though!!

I really hope you can, keep us posted!

eCigs or Vape are illegal in Singapore. So no mass adoption here.
But for folks who are addicted to cigs and wanna move to eCig and eventually quit, would be out of luck

This is an alternative of smokers but still have nicotine . So it can also become bad habit .

Holy shit the last thing we need is those things in highschools. I could see them being so much more initially addictive than cigarettes. Imagine how easy it would be to learn to smoke if you didn't spend the first dozen cigs coughing your face off?

I am a big believer of keeping cannabis out of the hands of high schoolers as well and this wouldn't help a bit.

They better come down hard on these at the school level because they will be mail ordering them on the darkweeb pronto!

Well, I can tell you the Juul helped me kick a 15 year smoking habit, I stand by it. They just released a 3% nicotine version (down from 5%) to help those of us who want to quit nicotine entirely. Much much better than cigarettes.

Yeah home is home.we only reluxe in our homes.Your are so enjoying your hunting trip.I also like cigar.Great time. You are rock. Thanks for sharing.@Broncnutz.
