It seems almost poetic that one of the first truly futuristic flying cars will be manufactured by the car company that helped Marty McFly go Back to the Future in 1985. But before you go flitting out your garage in preparation, please note: It’s technically called a two-seat vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) personal air transport vehicle, and not a ‘flying car’. DeLorean’s DR-7 sports some seriously hard-core-looking designs, with dual rotors nestled along the centre line of the body that flip around for vertical take-offs and forward flight. The design is also very practical. With two sets of wings, front and back, as well as a pair of winglets underneath, the DR-7 is designed for speed and stability in the air, but a nifty origami-like folding trick allows the wings to be tucked away along the side for parking in the average single garage. When not folded up however, the DR-7 spans 5.6 metres, and is 6 metres long. DeLorean claims the aircraft will be fully electric and self-flying, meaning anyone will be able to use it without having to get expensive and difficult-to-obtain pilot’s licences. With a full-sized prototype currently being built that will do 200 km on a charge, DeLorean is confident it will deliver on its long-distance dreams when the final product is completed, making it more than just an inner- city commuter. To accomplish this, those futuristic wings will allow high-altitude cruising for greater energy efficiency, but also allow the DR-7 to glide in case of a power outage, and not fall out of the air like a rock.
