In light of Vitalik's exhortation for to do something meaningful for society (Humanitarian Grand Challenge)

Can crypto be more than crypto?

Under the noise of trading tips, "expert" price predictions, and the ever present "HODL!" war cry (or death rattle, depending on which way the market's moving) I think it's important for the community to be reminded once in a while that this whole crypto thing could be about more than just profits and trips to the moon. Case in point, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, tweeted this out late last year:

Good point: can crypto actually achieve something meaningful for society? I come from a humanitarian background, having responded to different types of of crises from man-made (post civil war Angola, Darfur, Syria, Afghanistan) to natural disasters (the Indian Ocean tsunami, Ebola, Haiti earthquake, Nepal earthquake). So to me, one of the most exciting applications of this new technology is potentially improving the way life saving humanitarian aid is delivered.

Progress is already being made on this front, from food voucher distribution (https://qz.com/1118743/world-food-programmes-ethereum-based-blockchain-for-syrian-refugees-in-jordan/) to helping the refugee or the stateless prove their identities (http://fortune.com/2017/06/19/id2020-blockchain-microsoft/). And new initiative was launched today, supported by the American, Canadian, and UK governments - the Humanitarian Grand Challenge.

The Humanitarian Grand Challenge (http://humanitariangrandchallenge.org/about-challenge) seeks to connect humanitarians with private sector actors (I'm looking at you, cryptosphere) to focus on the following key areas:

Safe Water and Sanitation. Energy. Life-Saving Information. Health Products and Services.

So? Are the brightest minds in crypto ready in 2018 to lend their expertise to trying to solve some of the planet's toughest problems? Or do we, as Buterin suggests, still have some maturing to do?

If crypto is to be about something bigger than quick profits, what better application that improving the way life saving humanitarian aid is implemented?

Awesome, thank you so much @abasinkanga!!!

The Dogecoin community on Reddit is rather famous for their charitable giving. They donated to help the Haitian bobsled team attend the Olympics in 2012, donated tons of socks to homeless shelters, and...good grief,I can't think of the other main project they did...

Regardless, I very there steemit community could do something similar if we put our minds to it...

No way, thanks for sharing @ddrfr33k, I had no idea Doge was into that, much wow and much respect to the Dogecoin community!

I agree, there are a lot of creative and smart people on Steemit. That's why I wrote the article: I know there are some brilliant people out there with a lot to say on how technology could address some of the big global problems - I just don't know of anyone personally. I would be great to see this technology become a game changer not only for tech and business but also for the humanitarian sphere.

Are you a part of the Minnow Support Project? They can be a bit...particular...about the way they do things, but I bet we could rally some tuna and/or dolphins to join us in fundraising for a good cause.

Hell, I'd help make it happen!

Nope, not a part of the Minnow Support Project, pretty new around here not quite sure what I'm doing yet! I'd be up to try and with my background in humanitarian assistance I have tons of ideas for good causes and organizations!

Thanks man! I'm in the middle of Nowhere at the moment (not fair to nowhere - actually in a place called Nuwakot, Nepal) so will check that out once I'm back with reliable internet. Thank you!
