'I made it!': Dutchman's 95,000km electric car trip ends in Sydney

A Dutchman and his electric car have completed a three-year, 95,000km trip across the world in Sydney.
Wiebe Wakker left the Netherlands in March 2016 with no money and a goal to prove the viability of electric vehicles by making his way to Australia.
With no money, he relied on the generosity and power points of supporters as he journeyed across 33 countries including Turkey, Iran, India, and Malaysia.
The 1119-day trip ended at Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens on Sunday.

Nice interview of he introducing his custom Volkswagen Golf EV 2009

Some of Tesla owners are still planning to take a road tour. However, he already completed the great trip with this 10 years old EV, as you can see, actions/execution are really powerful than any words.

Wakker's website- Plug me in Project , has all the information about this great journey.

Initiative

In March 2016 I started my project "Plug Me In." With an electric car I travel from the Netherlands to Sydney, without money but with a higher purpose.

Plug Me In is based on collaboration between people where everyone has their own input. On the plugmeinrproject.com website, everyone has the option of supporting the trip with a meal, a roof over my head or an electrical outlet to charge the electric car. The route is determined on the basis of these offers and so I was sent zigzagging around the world. From the Netherlands to Italy, then up again to the North Cape and via Eastern Europe I ended up in Asia. I arrived in the UAE via Turkey and Iran and then crossed India and Southeast Asia. I have since seen 33 countries, driven 66,000 km and have not yet visited one gas station. In exchange for the energy that people offer, they receive a sustainable drinking bottle and I share my experiences and knowledge.

More than 1,400 people from 45 countries have already contributed to the project and this led to unexpected meetings with a minister in Germany, sheikhs in the Emirates and a royal family in Malaysia.

Target

Plug Me In is an adventure with a mission. The goal is to share knowledge, inspire and accelerate the transition to a climate neutral future.
By traveling to Sydney with an electric car, I hope to dispel the myth that electric vehicles do not have the same endurance as their fuel-driven cousins. If I can drive to the other side of the world with a plug-in car, we must also be able to take it to the Appie (Albert Heijn).

During the trip, I stop at organizations, initiatives and inspiring people in all countries to hear and see what the sustainability challenges are in the various regions and what solutions are already available.
For example, in Dubai I spoke to a sheik who had a tool to grow plants in the desert, on Java I saw by superstition one million diapers each day ending up in the largest river on the island and someone in Zurich let me experience how to separates human excrement and then converts it into energy.
I make videos about all these meetings that I post on my blog and social media channels. I have since built up a community of around 45,000 loyal followers and my videos have been viewed more than six million times. In almost all countries I visit, I reach the national media and I have appeared on Sky News Arabia, CNN and with publications in, among others, Lonely Planet, Auto Bild, NRC Next and Der Spiegel.

Wiebe Wakker
