I spent the weekend working on another cross stitch pattern, so I didn't do as much knitting as I would have liked. But I did get a chance to start these new mittens last week. They are going to be made with a buffalo yarn that that is so very soft. I enjoyed working with buffalo on a previous project when I made my husband a hat, and I decided this would be ideal for a set of mittens.
The color is called Full Moon and is a black/blue that slightly varies. A few years ago they had a "clean out the warehouse" type sale and they were doing grab bags of unsold colors of their Buffalo yarn. This came in my grab bag and I'm very happy with the color of it.

I travel a lot for work and for several years they had a display in our airport of the different Yarns and things that were made from Buffalo. Every time I flew in or out I would look at their display and wish I could find some to buy, but nobody in town actually sold it! It was all for ordering online. Then, one year I was working at a friend's booth at a retailer show and they were set up just a few booths down from us so I got to know their sales guy.

I asked him about the display in the airport and they had no idea that they had it, a prior marketing person had contracted it to the airport and then left the company. Having paid for 2 years of displaying the stuff.

So the next week when I went to the airport... it was to pick up their display and ship it back to them! But because of the shipping expense, and for my time, I got to keep all the yarn on display! And a set of gloves that my husband loves. :)

I still have some of that yarn, it is laceweight which I do not often have a use for, but someday I am sure I will!

Sort:

I would say this is a wooly happy ending. I am addicted to wool and can so understand your desire to rescue the lonely wool at the airport.

It needed a loving home, away from the staring eyes of travelers... :)

What luck regarding finding the sales rep and arranging to rescue the display! Could you please show us when you get to the thumbs? I've tried mittens like a half dozen times and my thumbs always seem frail and holey at that joint!

Will do so! I have had the same issue with thumbs so I am going to see if there are any techniques that work better. Will let you know.

Many thanks! 😃

The color of the yarn is amazing!

Like shadows on water under a full moon. I can't wait to see how these turn out! Thank you!

Nice! I have never worked with buffalo yarn. I love the deep color of it! Looking forward to see how they turn out!!

She's not wrong about the gloves. I wear them everyday in the cold weather.

@jamethiel... today I learnt about buffalo yarn... wow ! And that knitting needle I would like to see how tricky it is to hold...

Thanks !

I will try to do some photo tutorials on knitting in the round sometime when I am not using such a dark yarn. :)
I do the continental style knit whsen possible, where if i am knitting the yarn is tensioned by a few wraps around my left index finger

Then you do knit stitches forever... until you achieve the length you want and need to start shaping. Working in the round is WAY easy once you have the project on the needles.

Thanks for showing me @jamethiel !
I have knitted in the round before but I struggle with the length of the plastic bit that connects the needles. It just seems to be too long and it twists ... In your case I see as if there's very plastic and as if the round needle is nearly the width of the project if that makes sense...

Having the right length is very handy, I had to pick up these needles with the smaller 9 inch length because the 16 inch I use for hats is way too big! And the 40 inch I use for a blanket... the right tool for the job is so handy. :)

Thank you for the extra info @jamethiel... I will look out for the 9 inch length needles...

That's a brilliant story and the yarn looks amazing, a lovely colour and I like the sheen. I've never tried gloves and thumbs, so I look forward to your tips.
