My experiments with filet crochet - update on the sock rag rug - mending ...

As I have noticed that there is a lot of interest in filet crochet here, today I'm sharing some of my own past experiments with this technique.

The designs in cream colour two-ply yarn are not mine I just got the designs from the net. As you can see quite clearly they're not that perfect. I miscounted the tulip flower top section and didn't undo it as yet another reminder to be careful.

My favourite is the house... My plan has been to find really thin thread and to apply it on a greetings card (one day).

I did create the 3-D pink covered vanilla extract bottle though. I used thread and my 2.5 mm crochet hook - the bottle's around 9 cm tall.

I will briefly show how I did it... I doubt you will ever want to make this sort of thing as it has no real application; although it could be used a mini vase. I made it because I like experimenting with crochet as you probably have noticed by now.

Anyhow, I started with the base and I made a circular shape using 11 double crochet stitches. I increased in the second row : one chain between each double crochet and also 'every so often' two double crochets in the stitch below. I just needed to make sure I had the base size.

I then crocheted one row without increasing.

'mesh' or 'fancy stitch'? : I went for a single flower with six petals on one half of the bottle.

On the other side I just went for one 4 petal flower.

At this point I felt I needed the bottle (not literally of course 😆) to make sure I decreased to follow the shape. As you can see the decreases look a bit 'coarse' but they did the job. I just basically did not crochet the chain between some double crochets.

This is a very small item so the work was minimal. I was happy with the final result...

I have also been trying to finish the sock 'rag' rug, but in the car it has been a bit tricky to get it finished.

(Thank you to @tinygalaxy for taking the photo of me sewing it)

It's looking fine though :

Somehow I also need to repair this terrible tear on @tinygalaxy's only favourite jacket 😵

Ahora voy a ver tus otras publicaciones y te 'sigo' 😊

Sí, feliz de haberles encontrado. Amo tejer y me encanta compartir mi experiencia de este maravilloso mundo del tejido. Gracias por la bienvenida. Muchos saludos.

I like the little vanilla extract bottle cover 😊 What sort of fabric is the jacket? You've reminded me that I have a suede coat in a cupboard with a huge tear in it. It's a beautiful coat, with a hood (my favourite style, and was quite stylish (unlike my heavy wool duffle coat which is just warm). The tear started when I caught one of the button shanks (?) on a door handle. I understand there are adhesives now for suede and leather - the woman in the dry cleaning repair shop told me. She also advised me that my Italian fake leather jacket could go in the washing machine "just dry it inside out" rather than paying a lot of money for cleaning. She's saved me loads, but I do wonder how they stayed in business! Can you do a tutorial of the repair so I can get a clue? 😁

Alas @shanibeer... I'm about to throw in the towel on the mending. I have now stabilized the tear roughly...
I can totally make a feature of that area either by 'mending' à la wabi-sabi or putting an applique (patch) à la Chanin (but 'cheaper').
My first impression is that because there is a bit missing anything I do will just show up. So I will have to consult with the owner to see what she wants to do.
It's a second hand ('vintage') shell fabric bomber style jacket that she bought from Asos by the way; nothing fancy but it's roomy enough for her to feel comfy in it. I have been telling her to buy herself a new jacket for ages 😉 Our descent yesterday from the ruins of the Llandovery Castle was a bit too much for it !
I always just improvise on the mending... Perhaps you could upload a picture to look at options :) We could have a mending surgery then.

A mending surgery is a great idea - I will excavate it!

They're so cute, also I think the tulip looks kinda good with the top part. The bottle looks really neat :) gl with the jacket, that looks like a nasty tear :s

Thank you @ivan-g... The tear seems to need reconstructive surgery really... not an easy one.

That’s some cute work. I tried filet crochet before and something didn’t click and I couldn’t get the first row to work. My mom makes summer blankets this way with elaborate pictures on them. Me... if I figure it out, I’ll make more placemats haha.

It would be great to see some of the blankets that your mum makes @metzli...
When I started doing filet crochet I had two main problems :

  1. the number of chains between each double crochet/treble. Sometimes I felt two chains left too big a gap so I just made one chain... It's amazing how much it can change the appearance of the piece... I learnt the hard way...
  2. I kept on getting 'crooked' stitches so I eventually discovered where to insert the crochet hook to avoid this problem...
All trial and error with me ...

I really wanted to make them say words... well, at the time I was trying I was trying to make mean words look pretty. hahah.

Filet - o - mean words crochet...

I will be sharing some of my moms work soon. Her work is all over my home... my grandma's too...

I’m not sure how my filet crochet would turn out if I tried it but yours turned out so cute. I really love the pink bottle holder as well as the tulip and house. I like the idea of using thread to apply your designs to greeting cards!

Your sock rag rug is turning out very cute as well. Thanks for sharing your progress with us!

Thank you @crosheille ! I will share the results of my filet crochet efforts in the near future 🌺

Awesome!!! I’d love to see them! 😉

The bottle!!!! So cute and pink and so tiny. I love things like this (especially the little flower) but as you already wrote, I would never attempt them myself. It would make me so nervous to work with such tiny dimensions and thin yarn, perhaps I would try afterwards to hit someone with a bottle.

And the rug... I am curious why you are working in the car? Did I skip something in your post where you explained it?.. Maybe it is a present and you can work only secretly? Or do you have a robot car which drives while you sew (I want it)... so many questions.

I wish... @neumannsalva... It would be good to have a driverless car ... with so many country road bends around here that will take a few years though to pass safety standards.

I had a 3 hour wait yesterday in a place called Llandovery. There's no real public transport around here on a Sunday and the place is too far to just drop off and then go back to collect... So I scheduled to work on a few things while my copilot @tinygalaxy was going to do drawings... Weather wise it was fairly dry.

In the car park, there was this smallish mound with a ruined castle to climb! We climbed the mound and, unfortunately, got a bit stuck on the way down : the path was too smooth and we were wearing the wrong type of shoes with no real 'traction' (normally I wear wellington boots)... We wasted a lot of time in the descent ...

(not that high but quite steep)

Then the long strip that needed sewing was rather long to manoeuvre in the front driver's seat; meanwhile the back seat was busy with stuff. (At this point I have to decide whether to add this bit of detail, but I will do to entertain you : the floor of part of the back of the car is currently flooded and we do not know why, but coincidentally the back window wiper hasn't worked so well recently so 'is that related?' So I have had to avoid putting things on the floor or sitting there to work... that's what I normally do to avoid attracting attention.)

So my super plan to work in the car did not go that well... The proper course of action is to lay the big strip of future rug on a flat surface and then sew it... I have scheduled that for tomorrow ... Apologies for my convoluted answer 😊...

I like the little house! Filet crochet makes it such fun to be able to create your own patterns!

Thank you for the comment @anise... I lack your patience and dedication though 😉

loin knitting is very difficult for me - it's a very laborious job. you got a pretty bottle :) the hole on the jacket is terrible. you will have a lot of work

Thank you @tali72... The hole in the jacket is too big for a little repair ! I think a new jacket is needed 😆

did you do that sewing while driving ?! Nah, I'm sure you parked and was taking a rest or something. Your pink knitted bottle is cute. I saw a vase once it was covered in hand made beads like how beads are knitted or what the joining together of beads is called .
As for the jacket you could buy the exact colour material in the store , sew it on the torn part then cut out the turn parts of the jacket after you are done sewing the new material. It would look as good as new 🙂

Thank you @wondermaey... I'm a totally safe-conscious driver so, no, I was parked trying to get some work done :)

I thought so too🙂

Those crochet pieces are so cute! I would be totally lost trying to make them, but they turned out great. I like the way the rag rug is going. I tried to do one out of old towels once and it made a huge mess. I gave up and left the mess at my parents' house. Oops!!

Thank you @apanamamama... I imagine the old towels kept fraying... that's a pity! but the mess was probably easy to hoover 🌺
