In my needlework group with members from the church wee do a lot of charity work making all kinds off things and bring them to people who are deserving. We made pillowcases, coasters, scarfs and pull blankets. But we knit aswell. If we get an idea we try to be creative and find a cause.
Pull blankets ( I blogged about this before ) are little 50 x 50 blankets made off little pieces off fabric which we buy in Utrecht. One of the biggest fabrics market in Holland.
The blankets have different structures, buttons ribbons that are partial loose. But also vellcrow, hooks and beads. Demented or Alzheimer’s elderly people like picking. so they are busy and they cannot pull something like a tablecloth off the table. These little pieces can be a help to that.
But we also make bibs. Because people in the elderly homes, were most of them are demented too sometimes mess with food, we make the bibs 60 cm long, made from bath towels that we get sponsored by the second hand shop.
These are the two I made. And I hope you see the size. The new k g of the bib is that they are belly covering if you know what I mean. The dress underneath must be covered. Well besides we are very productive we also have fun, we talk, have tea and cake. It’s just a nice evening with a purpose.
In the last picture is the grandma of my best friend. She is not demented but just loves when we bring new ones. In this photo it’s that she holds a pull blanket

Paper hihih so the rugs but we do have them don’t worry. It’s so much fun. And always something different that’s the most fun. We make clothes , I change a lot off pieces of clothing that than are different from what I bought, by adding or replacing buttons or beads. And we nl it and embroider. Couldn’t do without the sewing club
What a lovely project. I never heard of a pull blanket before but what a great idea to help people with dementia. 💕
Yep it’s known that people with dementia live in their own world and always want to touch or always pull on clothes they can do that for hours. And to give them different feels in material and like buttons and ribbons. That way they have another fascination than the tablecloth or their clothes

Het is fantastisch en vooral mooie gebouwen zonder de oude lady niet tekort te doen yep I love my home town. But planet earth knows rotterdam 🤔 and speaks Dutch mijn klomp breekt als je in Nederland woont en we elkaar nog niet hebben gezien bij een meetup

I just love that your church gets together to do this. I remember when you shared about the pull blankets. It was nice seeing someone enjoying them, they are so cute and colorful. I also love the bib idea as well.

I did the blog before and again I will stay doing them, the pull blankets are so easy snd simple but the elderly like it so much. And I found something out, do you know the animals or cuddly blankets for babies mostly with a ring attached for when the baby gets teeth, inside there is kinda like paper that makes sounds when you play with it .... oh dear I don’t know if I am
Making myself clear well it’s something that’s sewn into the pull blankets aswell and that sound they find so intreging and fun that we ( all the ladies ) not the Beyoncé ones hihih we love searching for new things to use. Kinda like an scavenger hunt in sewing land.
And I am now knitting 🧶 a MOF with round Penns it’s a knott tube app. 20 cm wide to put hands in, I will blog about it next week. I hope you understand I tried to translate as good as I can but let me know if I need to clarify this is so dear to my hart 😉

That is the biggest in Holland and so great to go and shop. And there we have a guy who has rest pieces of clothes and fabrics to make these pull blankets
That's terrific that you're so involved. No idea where you find the time to do it all, but it's a wonderful thing to do!
Eventhough i am a very busy mama-working-steeming-wife 🐝 bee I have to do this. And it’s so much fun. Nee time for others how cool ! And the bibs were needed. The homes here for the elderly are understaffed and not every person has a nurse one in one to take care of the feeding. This way it’s post without ruining clothes, and the bibs can be washed. So we recycle old towels and help in our own sewing way 😉
I have to say this is amazing @brittandjosie. Just reading it made me want to get my sewing machine out and start a project. It would be so fun to be part of a group like this, perhaps I'll have to look around my area and see what I can find. This lap blanket would have been perfect for my mother-in-law when she was alive. It would have definitely helped calm her anxiousness. Between the bibs and the blankets you guys are definitely angels to many :)
Ahhhhhh that’s so sweet. And indeed it helps. When one of the ladies from church asked us to help her make them I was like : what? Why and does it help ? So she explained and now we made Many and it works. We already had some returned to repair and put more buttons on and different ribbons and so in and than we gave them back.
But do try and make some with a group of like minded and give them as a present to the local elderly home for Christmas with the explanation that anxiety and time are more bareble with these simply made pull blankets
